can I find a large used bike mrkt in Europe

I am showing my age but I seem to remember one could fly to Amsterdam, buy a used bike from newspaper / dealer, use it for a month or 2 and return to Amsterdam and sell it back. Is this possible or just a dream? Another rememberance is that one could buy a new bike (BMW) use if for 4 - 6 weeks, claim it as a personal vehicle and send it back to Canada duty free and save enough to pay for your vacation

Superdoug...BMW used to have a similar scheme in AUS but they dont anymore..even if the price is the same..bloody shame I mean they have to send the bike out to sell it anyway and they are made in the same factory.

Buying and selling a bike in Europe for foreigners is not a great problem - do a little searching on the HUBB - much discussed.

For under three weeks or so best to rent. Over two months buy or bring your own. In between is grey, depends on how well you do your homework and how much hassle you are willing to go through.

in the Netherlands;

www.marktplaats.nl > motoren/bromfietsen.

If you tell, what you want and how much you have to spent, I can look around over here.

thank-you for your offer, but nothing needed right now, just ideas. I am just researching for possibly next year. I would want a large highway bike such as a Yamaha Concourse or BMW because I envision going hostel to hostel on a large bike around Europe for a month or 2 in May & June. Then reselling the bike in Amsterdam afterwards, or some other port of entry. Does this sound feasible ?

Sounds sensible. You may face problems in registering & insuring a bike bought in Europe if you have no address to use. The difficulties vary depending on the country.

In addition, some countries are regarded as being easier than others for a non-EU citizen to register a bike in. The UK is generally regarded as being the easy option. The language will also be in your favour.

Willing to help if needed. Try looking at www.mcn.com for bikes for sale & insurance. You can get K100's quite cheaply here, as well as having a good spares availability in Europe.
