buying bike in chile

Hi there,

I am going to chile in September and was going to fly my bike in but am now considering buying one there. I've scoured the hubb for information and have seen a few links that apparently give details of the process. However, a number of the links produce the 404 error message. Does anyone know how to get to the posts that give this information?

I will be looking for a 250 as i'm only licenced to ride up to 33 bhp. Does anyone know
1. whether it's easy to pick up a 250 in chile
2. a good mechanic who could attach pannier racks etc

thanks
Christine

Hi Cristine,
I think the 404 errors indicate the threads may have been removed. Maybe too old? Contact Grant, he will know. Keep searching, there is a ton of info on
buying bikes in Chile.

Also, the restrictions on your UK licence mean nothing in Chili or anywhere in
S. America. Get your self an international driving license.

(As an aside, I would not hand over my passport or REAL license to traffic police. Used expired passports and out of date documents when dealing with traffic police. Aduana and Migracion officials are a different story of course.)

So no need to limit your bike search to 250cc. Although a 250 is a good choice. BTW, most 250cc bikes have only around 15 HP. A stock KLR 650
makes about 35 HP.

Good luck finding a bike!

Patrick

Buying bike in chile

Thanks for replying so quickly patrick

The reason I have to stick to a 33bhp is that the insurance here will only cover me if I'm on a bike that I'm licenced for.

Grant, if you read this - any advice on getting old threads?

I maybe mistaken but I am sure jens (Atwoke - on this site) has a bike for sale in chile, as for the 33bhp really dont think anyone outside the uk would question this nor would it be worthwhile to try and send an insurance inspector to see if your bike was restricted anyway. But it is fairly cheap and easy to restrict power in most bikes anyway.

Yes, Adventure950 is rigth, I have a XT600 for sale in Santiago. Check the bikes for sale section: 2 xt600 in santiago. Offers above USD4000.

Phill's thread should have all the information needed. The RUT office is excellent advice.

Get in touch with the Santiago community to find out what's on the market now. There were loads of 250s on Lira Street a few months ago. Some nice Yamahas and Hondas. Generally it is a much easier size to find than a 600.

Make sure you get a sales contract and the authorisation letters for the countries you want to visit at the notary. It will take about 4 weeks for the new Inscription to come through.

Enjoy the experience

Jens

Buying bike in Chile

Thanks Jake, Phill and Jens for your replies. I've found the detailed information on the buying process posted by Phill - very useful, nice one Phill. I'll contact the Chile community for ore info - because I'm only 5ft 1 I need a bike wth a low seat - I've got a serow at the moment and most 250 bikes I've seen on Chile bike web sites have high seats. Still unsure whether to just ship my Serow over.
Anyway, Cheers for the information
Christine

Hi Cyrusa,

I have sold one of the XTs and the other one is one the market from early January. I'm taking it to Ushuaia for the Xmas New Year period and will be back in Santiago around the 5th January.

I have a friend in Santiago who will be able to complete any deal and help with paperwork (if needed).

I'll be coming around July to pick up a bike. Are they easy to purchase? Cash up front and that's it? Or do you have to register, get insured, etc...

I need to sell my XR650L in Buenos Aires. It is only a few days' ride from BA to Chile. Might be worth it for you.
Good bike- see my other post for details.

Please let me know

PS it is lowered to fit me (5'6")
(thought that might be of interest as you were looking for a smaller bike)
