Buying a bike in Colombia?

Hi all, I am thinking of buying a bike in Colombia in october to travel south with. Has anyone done this? Or does anyone have any advice? I have some friends of friends there so am not so worried about getting ripped off but more the technicalaties or availability. Th other option is to buy it in the USA which is cheap and I get to take in Central America too.

Cheers Baz

bikes in columbia

I'm here right now and Columbia has some of the highest prices I've seen so far for bikes....KLR in USA is 5300 more or less and here I think it's 9500 USD here,
other countries in central and south america are about the same because of high taxes
You can buy and register a bike in almost all the countries down here - I think Peru, Chile are the easiest so I've heard
If you bring one down esp a 650 KLR or BMW you will be able to sell it for what you paid for it in states easy enough despite the high taxes
I think someone on HUBB just shipped one from Miama to Bogota for 1000 which is great price
btw Bogota is a great city to start from, clean reasonable traffic lot of local bikers will help you out lots of repair shops

Colombia

Hi Guys, I am also very interested in finding out about buying a bike in Colombia,
Is there alot of second hand bikes for sale?
Also do you know if the prices are as high in Brazil, is it easy to buy a bike in Brazil, what paperwork is involved?

Cheers

A Brazilian friend of mine told me that imported (japanese) bikes are very expensive in Brazil, far more even than the UK price (which is high already).

I only have his anecdotal opinion and don't know the cost of any locally produced bikes (if there are any), but a cheap option it is not.

Hi bikers,
I am now in Colombia and since 2 or 3 years it is not possible to buy a bike in Colombia, because you don't get a plate as a tourist. Imformation from DIAN in Colombia! After you have to pass the border from Colombia to Ecuador, so you need to export the bike. That cost a lot of taxes and it is not possible without a plate.
The best thing you can do is buy a bike from an other tourist and take them his plate and bikedocument. You don't have to registried the bike in your country.
I had no problems in all Southamerica.
Good luck!

Looking for a bike in Colombia

Dear Traveller,

I am planning to do what you say. But I am planning to use the bike first for a few months in Colombia. Do you know what needs to be done to ride the bike for a few months? Do I need to cross the border or are there other solutions you know of? Any limitations?

Cheers,

Wouter

What the guy is saying is right, you must buy an international registered bike as a tourist you are in order of not paying import taxes as nationals do. Most countries give you 90 days stay with extensions up to 180 days (6 mo.), then you must leave to Ecuador or Venezuela and re-enter if you want to stay long time
The pass from Cucuta to Venezuela is very simple and don't worry about the present situation between Venezuela and Colombia. You are not national of any of this countries after all.

And yes, you keep the tag from the previous owner with the registration, title and a notarized bill of selling. The n in the future you will sale the bike doing the same to another rider.
