BMW - HPN Adventure Frame F/S Capetown South Africa
I have available number 501 Adventure frame prepared by HPN in Germany. For you out there that does not know, HPN is the company that developed the original Paris Dakar BMW racing models for the BMW factory race team in the 80's.
This Frame is from a 1982 BMW R80G/S and is reinforced at various points. Mounting points was added for a frame mounted Rally fairing and the HPN 43 litre fuel tank. The fork rake angle is changed so that the bike can be fitted with 300mm long travel forks. The rear swing arm is lengthened by 100mm and reinforced. This frame come with the basic components from the original bike like the engine bottom end, Gearbox and final drive+wheels. All other parts will be retrofitted from HPN as the standard parts in most cases cannot be used anymore. Standard parts that are used should be replaced by new parts as the original parts is not reliable enough.(throttle cables, rubber mounts, seals etc.) I have a fully equipped workshop to assemble the bike, or can correspond to indicate step by step how this bike have to be assembled and what parts options is available. This is a once in a life time offer as it will take at least one year before you will be able to have any BMW frame prepared by HPN. You can look at an example on their site HPN Motorradtechnik GmbH I am selling this frame as I am ready to receive two more frames from HPN in the next month or two as they are busy working on them at the moment. Hello gsworkshop, Just a couple of questions for you regarding this BMW. First one is, are you located and building this bike in Germany, because your location says otherwise? Secondly, how specific and available are your custom options for rebuild; for example, riders Ht/Wt. And finally, are you familiar with the several hoops a rider has to jump through to purchase, insure and export this bike after riding around the EU, and then return home to Canada? Your reply is appreciated, as is everyone else's opinions. Cheers all,

The G/S workshop is located in Cape Town. I assemble HPN versions of the BMW R80 and R100 GS models part-time. I work very closely with HPN in Germany who is doing the frame reinforcements and supply me with all the special parts.
HPN cater more for the connoisseur rider with reasonably deep pockets and a sense of adventure unlike the sense of suicide that a lot of RTW travelers have to make use of inferior equipment often in an inferior condition. The White Power suspension that is normally fitted have various spring options to cater for different bike and rider weights. The suspension is always supplied with a standard spring setup though. The HPN frame and suspension is normally quite tall and the seat thickness is often used to regulate the seat height for shorter or taller riders. At the moment I only have the frame available so I am sure it will be simple and easy to insure and ship anywhere in the world, besides it has done a recent trip to Germany to have the frame mods done. Regarding a complete bike I will have to check how many hoops there are but my approach to this is that you deal with these problems when they are due. The German TUV is probably some of the toughest in the world and everything HPN does is compliant to these specifications and where need will have TUV certificates. As far as the Canadian import laws I will have know idea as I have never exported anything to Canada. I am not sure that this is answering your questions? |

BMW-HPN Adventure Frame
Hello G/S Workshop,
Thank-you for answering my questions regarding the BMWs/frames etc. I zoomed in on the HPN Motorradtechnik link in your posting, and wondered if the bikes were available for purchasing/insuring and exporting after a tour around the EU. I've owned 2 beetles, 2 westphalias & a eurovan and would like to get a beemer(strict safety/emission tests and great engineering). I'll keep on the look out as Japanese bikes would be my alternative choice. Cheers and thanks ![]() PS: The bikes on the pages are beautiful!!

Sorry but HPN does not sell bikes, they only prepare them on customer demand. Even buying used ones can be hard as according to Klaus from HPN only about 10% of the almost 700 bikes they have built since 1987 have been sold by the original owners.
This is why this frame is worth its weight in gold as you will have to find used bike, strip it down, send to Germany and wait about one year before they will contact you to see how you want the frame prepared. The downside of my frame is it does not leave you the option of choosing how you want the frame set up like, single or twin swing arm, luggage carriers, single or double seat etc, etc. |

This frame is still in my workshop and although I am having enquiries there has been no takers yet.
If HPN tickles your fancy this is a golden opportunity as you will wait at least one and a half years just to get a frame made. a Complete bike will be ready by the time you retire. If you have between $ 15000.00US and $ 30000.00US you want to invest in the most awesome overland bike, this is your calling card. You can send me a private message or post a reply here or call me in Cape Town, South Africa at +27 72 6443300 or + 27 21 4478968. Ask for Altus Pienaar. |

I do not suggest I would want $15000 for the frame, it is for a complete bike built using the frame but choosing more basic convertions, whereas $50000 can buy you a bike as close to the original Dakar winner of 85 as you can get.
This pic is an example of one that cost more than $45000 to put together. Last edited by gsworkshop; 17 Sep 2008 at 18:16. |

Don't know what happened the first time round?
Here it is and all I can say is that this bike is poison, if you let go to fast in 1st (Short 1st fitted) it can leave you a bit light headed. It also have this tendency to get you to open the throttle when you would normally start to slow down with most other bikes. The Mahle motor is as smooth as that of the 1200GS if not smoother making it it lot nicer than the HP2 when the revs start climbing above 3500rpm. With so much torque to the rear wheel, spinning out with the slightest amount of throttle right up to 3rd gear, it is incredible the amount of control the rider is allowed. All in all this is a well balanced machine with flexibility in both its handling and application as it can easily be used in city traffic, for touring and can handle the worst off road conditions with ease. It is a pity I can't do the same here but with the limitations placed on posting images there is now way to illustrate a thread in the same way.
I have also posted a video on YouTube YouTube - BMW GS by HPN; RIDE THE ADVENTURE |
