Smile Bike wanted in South America

Hey
I'm planning a 6-12 month motorbike tour of South America in June 09 and would like to buy a bike - BMW f650 or similiar (looking for something fairly light and simple-a bit like myself!)

My plan is to fly into Ecuador, do some voluntary work for a bit and then head south on a bike I've bought locally- although nothing's fixed at the moment, so Im fairly flexible.
Any sellers or general advice on any of the above get in touch.

Ta.

I think you'd have a much better chance looking in Argentina or Chile. If you do want to start from up north, consider Medellin, Colombia (also for a great time) and contact Paul at Casa Kiwi (look in lonely planet or message me for contact info) to see if he knows of anyone selling such a bike.

Good luck!..

From various threads I've read on hear, Argentina sounds a bit tricky for taking a bike out of the country?
Maybe Chile would be better?

What's the deal with paperwork when buying of a fellow traveller? As I understand it you need a temporary import document, but what about the registration document - surely that would be in the original owners name ie not the same name as in my passport? Im a bit in the dark about how easy it is to just buy someone else's bike and then ride out of the country?
All advice welcome!

Hi,

i drove from Alaska to Argentina with a F 650 GS Dakar. Today i arrived in Ushuaia. I crossed all the borders with a copy of my title. Nobody said anything. If you want to buy a bike you have to scan the documents and change the owner, adress ... with Photoshop. That's the way it works. Illegal but you need your name on the title.

I'm offering the bike for sale at the moment but you are looking for a bike in a few months.

Drive through Colombia. It's worth it. One of my favourites of the hole trip.

Saludos from Ushuaia

Hiya

Horrendous case of self promotion, but check my ad for the new DR650´s - one of these can be available and ready and waiting for you in Ecuador no problem, still with 12 mth worldwide warranty on them

Recommend you check the links in the ad or even go to THE WRONG WAY DOWN

Perfect bike for this trip

Cheers
Barney

Ronald is right, no one gives a crap about what kind of paper you hand them. But the sale can easily be done legally, and perhaps is necessary. No probs with exiting Argentina, you just can't make the sale there. Bike needs to exit Argentina with the owner that took it there. So the original owner, you, and the bike take the ferry from BA to Uruguay, make a notary sale, create your new (and fake) registration document, then go back to BA with the bike under your name. You don't even use the bill of sale from the notary on your Argentina re-entry, or ever after. The owner can also make a US sale normally by filling out the back of the title and sending it to DMV, or handing it to you for you to send. I too have a bike (2008 KLR) for sale in BA, and this is what I gathered from Moran (who as well has a bike for sale .

(Ronald! Is that you? How cold is Ushuaia?)

you could maybe even buy my Tornado in Bogota and I'll drive the Suzuki ??
you can have it for 600 USD the Suzuki, 3500 for the Tornado it's like new and costs 4500 USD in SA, made in Brazil, parts easy to find, GREAT bike actually........
I'll be in Bogota for a couple of weeks yet
the Suzuki's a good bike - not a big dog but does fine
the Tornado is awesome for a 250

Zig
Hi
I would definitely be interested in your bikes, but I won't be in SA before June............?
By the way - where abouts is the orphanage you are volunteering at?

Cheers

bikes

I think the Suzuki is sold to a backpacker.....he's getting a great deal
If I decide to go to India in June or July the Tornado would be ready then in Peru or Bolivia I think
pretty good bike but I get looks of disdain from the big dogs esp BMW riders, not all but some of them...
on the other hand I get great mileage, can go ANYWHERE (they can't the big turds) and I can pass fully loaded going uphill....what more do I want ???

I agree.
I'm not really into the whole Ewan & Charlie thing - 6 gallon tanks, huge aluminium panniers etc....... would rather travel light.
I figure if locals can travel around there own Country without the need for some overloaded tank then so can I!
If your still looking to sell your xr 250 June /July then let me know.

By the way I would definitely recommend India -rent or buy an Enfield.

DR650SE for Sale in May/June 2009 in South America

Hi,

I'll have one or two readily equipped Travel-Bikes for sale in South America around May 2009:
SUZUKI DR 650 SE, year 2008, 16.000 Miles (~25.000 km)

Reconsider shipping your own bike to South America. There are two ideal Travel bikes already waiting for you there. As European citizens we had bought them in California and drove them down south to Argentina. They are now waiting for you to drive them a bit further around South America or even back to the US.
Compared to a KLR these bikes are lighter, more offroad capable and extremely reliable. For small riders they can even easily bw lowered an inch by just changing a bolt in the back into another hole.

Each bike is readily equipped with:
  • 2 Aluminum Pannier Boxes (Happy Trail - Teton 9“)
  • SU-Rack and fast Puck-Mounts for the Aluminum Boxes
  • Top-Rack for additional bags (e.g. Stuffsack or Camping equipment)
  • Extra large 5 Gallon (20 Liter) IMS gas tank (blue)
  • Reinforced EIBACH front and rear spring as well as thicker fork oil (SAE10) resulting in much improved hghway and offroad performance.
  • Aluminum Skid Plate for additional frame and engine protection
Current condition:
  • All services (Oil & Filter changes, valve adjustments etc.) have been performed as required in the maintenance book.
  • Chains, tires and brake pads have recently been replaced by new ones.
  • Bikes did not have any crashes and do nat have any damages.
Paperwork:
Bikes can be handed over in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay or Uruguay.
Custom papers will best be changed to buyers name at a border post.
Registration of the bikes can also easily be changed within the US to buyers name (even if the buyer is a non-US-resident). Buyer will not have any legal problems touring South America or even on a trip back to the US.
