Auction advice needed... London
Hello,
Here's the thing- I need a bike but I'm broke. I'm thinking maybe I could pick something up cheap at an auction and work on it. So can anybody point me in the direction of good auctions in or around London? Got any great tips for me? Otherwise any suggestions on how to pick up bargain bikes (I'm thinking Japanese 600/650s) would be much appreciated. Many thanks. Mike |

dodgy......
to the HUBB Mike! Your best bet is advertise in LOOT or go round a few Bike Shops asking for an old dog of a trade in that needs TLC & an MOT, tell em you will buy as seen no warranty and give it a 'Good dose of lookin at' before you part with the cash.I wont say ALL Auctions are crap but generally what happens is bikes that cant or wont sell are sold off through Auction, then you have 'Auction Fever' where people Bid like mad because the bike 'looks' good..... mostly you have little comeback unless its nicked...... usually no warranty either, same as a private sale. Try an Honest " I'm Skint and need a bike to get to work can pay up to 300" or whatever your Budget is type ad in the paper.... cant harm.... Hope you find Something Martyn |

You know a good site that had a bunch of bike ads on it when I was looking for one in Europe was gumtree.com. It's out of London so you may have some luck finding something cheap or like mentioned throw an ad out.

IIRRC, Ebay bought Gumtree recently. Anyway, I agree with the general idea of looking around the online web auctions as well as the other possibilities mentioned above. You should still be able to find a "winter bargain" over the next few weeks but prices will tend to rise as Spring arrives. To be honest though Mike, if you are as skint as your user name on here, then you also need to think hard about the other costs of running a bike - not least, fuel at more than £1 per litre.

Thanks chaps- will try all the above.
Obviously I know there are costs, but I still reckon with a bit of initiative and endurance there must be ways to get a long way without spending TOO much- even if it's on the "what the hell, what's to loose?" principal. Anyone else got brilliant ideas? Mike |

solution?
Before you try ebay or auction get yer ass to Kempton racecourse Esher this Saturday Jan 19th for the motorcycle autojumble, virtually guarantee you will pick up a bargain, I used to buy the odd bike there, polish, mot it do very little work on it then put it on ebay
Look out for other motorcycle autojumbles if you do have no success there, another source is carbreakers sometimes have insurance 'writeoffs' but BEWARE.........Kempton is the place...good luck and repost Saturday evening to tell us what you brought!!
