Due to a timewaster who hadn't actually worked out how he was going to collect, our beloved RTW-experienced BMW R100GS is still up for grabs.
Unfortunately we have to sell our beloved motorbike. We bought it three years ago to travel around the world on. We did that for two years covering 32,000 miles. Having just got back to the UK, we find ourselves broke so we need to sell it. It has just sailed through its MOT without so much as a caution, so it has 12 months MOT.
These are amazing bikes. They are the best bikes for any kind of long trip. We searched for ages to find the right bike for our trip and this was definitely it. They are easily repaired anywhere in the world, and incredibly reliable. For a tourer/off-roader they are relatively lightweight, and extremely comfortable for long trips (numb bum doesn't kick in for a very long time). They are the perfect on/off road tourer.
The journey took its toll on the bike cosmetically obviously, but it was maintained very well mechanically and could easily go again right now if you wanted. It has no problems at all other than the cosmetic damage (which I will describe below). We experienced the common problems that these bikes suffer from during the journey and replaced parts as we went. The new parts are listed below with the appoximate miles since they were fitted.
All new cables, brake levers etc- 3000 miles ago
Reconditioned Gearbox - 4000 miles ago
New Bosch starter motor - 7000 miles ago
New Headlight Glass - 7000 miles ago
New repairable drive shaft (much better than standard shaft, from motorworks.co.uk) - 7000 miles ago
New Hagon Heavy Duty shock absorber (20,000 miles ago)
The front tyre is approx 1000 miles old. The rear tyre is pretty worn, but didn't get a caution during the MOT.
The bike has an Odyssey battery on it which I put in before the trip, it's still in perfect condition, and it started this weekend first time even after a three month break. Odyssey batteries are the best batteries, requiring no maintanance and giving plenty of cranking power. The bike will come with a CTEK small size battery charger. The battery is nice and small leaving room for a SLIME tyre compressor to fit within the holder, this will also come with the bike as will a tubeless puncture repair kit which is also under the seat.
If you have a good look through the pictures I have photographed all the bad bits.
This could be a great bike for somebody. The only problems are cosmetic.
The cosmetic damage includes:
The paintwork is scratched on the tank, on the lugagge rack and on the handlebars, and could do with some love
The seat is ripped in two places and has a small hole in it
There is one screw missing from the headlight assembly. Four screws should hold it in place, only three currently are. I have secured it on with a cable tie for now.
The rocker covers are faded
The BMW emblems are pretty shabby (very cheap to replace)
The rear tyre is quite worn
All the bad bits could be made good quite quickly with a bit of TLC. We were planning on doing it ourselves when we got back but we have sadly run out of money and must sell it as it is. In an ideal world we wouldn't be selling it at all, as it has served us amazingly well and we would love to keep it for future trips.
The bike is stored in a garage in Wirral.
