Uk Spec toyota 4-runner
 

Mid 90's Toyota 4 runners - do they have a rear diff lock or LSD ?

Anything to look out for on them when purchasing - any weak points or issues, looking at a '95 model for shorter / faster trips than the Iveco can do

Thinking of swapping the isuzu for a toyota for parts availability

Do you mean a 4 Runner or Surf?

Only ask as the 4 Runner is a UK version of the imported Second Generation Surf.

If it was me, I would be looking for a 3rd Gen Surf (1996 onwards), very similar to a Land Cruiser Colorado beneath, with the same things to lookout for when buying second hand being head problems with the 3.0 diesel 1KZ-TE, the Colorado also suffered from water getting into the auto gearbox due the radiator failing between ATF side and the water side. Less serious is partially seized front brake calipers.

I have never heard of a Surf or 4 Runner having a rear diff lock fitted as standard, maybe a LSD though.

Overall fantastic reliability if looked after although they do drink the fuel quickly.

If I think of anything else I will post it later.

Its an N plate 4-runner, ie. UK spec , manual gearbox, 3 litre engine

Drinks fuel - hmmm, the Isuzu isn't bad on fuel given that its a 3.1, I want something I can sleep in though and the 4-runner / surf looked to be the business

4-runner seemed to have less electrics than the surf.

NO rear lockers on the surfs/4runners but more sleeping length inside. I considered one after getting rid of the Colorado but theres not much in the prices and I prefer a manual to auto so stuck with a Colorado (I actually bought my old one back but that another story)

That will have the same engine as the 3rd gen / Colorado 1KZ-TE, same problems and strengths.

I think if you did 28 mpg on a run you did well.

Same electrics, the model with the least is an early 2nd gen surf with a non turbo 2.8 3L engine, I drive a Hi-lux every day with this engine, just passed another MOT at 20 years old :thumbup1:

Only have experience with Ozzie spec Hiluxs , less than 2.8 , very underpowered for sand dune work, later engines very critical you keep cooling system in first class condition , esp if you want to work them hard . later front suspension not as tough , but still not a bad truck also ride a bit rough on poor surfaces . some had lsd in rear , but the limited bit didnt seem to be long lasting , mind you they had a tough existence JMHO

decided against it in the end - didn't like the silly back window, was gonna jam sometime. Drove very nicely though

I see you have decided against the 4runner, but just so you know the main difference between the 3 litres surf and 4 runner is that the UK 4runner had a mechanical fuel pump on it rather that all the electrics on the surf.
