prado engine "puffing"

I have just inspected a 2003 3.0 L Turbodiesel Prado VX, 74000km. I am looking for a vehicle for a medical project in mountains of North Africa.

I was advised to open the oil cap when engine is running to look for white smoke. I saw no smoke, but felt a definite "puffing" against my hand. A friend told me this could mean the engine is worn out. The engine felt smooth to drive, good power, no odd noises, and no exhaust smoke.

I have felt this "puffing" on other prados, but didn't feel it when looking at a full size Landcruiser. Should i be worried, or is this just normal for a Prado engine?

Many thanks for advice
