LC fuel consumption
 

Hi chaps,
I just wondering about the fuel consumption on the LC 4.2ltr diesel
can anyone give me and idea on the mileage you will get in real life.

Some people can get 30mpg. It seems 22-25 is the norm with some people getting as low as 18-19.

apparently 24v is more economical than 12v

Here's my estimates for a 1HD-T engine, air to water intercooler and boost pressure at 14psi:

Morocco, fully loaded: 11 litres per 100km

Europe: 15 litres per 100 km

Tires: 285/75R16 M/T

Go figure...

For the 1-HZ engine 4.164 cc diesel (HZJ 80):

10-11 lt for 100 km

You can do about 750 km before the fuel light starts flashing on fast turns.
You still have around 20 lts reserve in the fuel tank.

Tires: 235/85-16 BFG AT
Without roof rack. (with it, add 1 lt / 100 km - 10% more)

13 liter / 100 km average over 70,000km

Fully loaded with roof rack

Tyres: 265/75R16 M/T (Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ - excellent tyre btw)

1993 12v auto 4.2 80, 140k miles, very well serviced

285/75 16 BFG MTs, 2" lift, roof rack, fully laden (weight of 3450kg),

trip to morocco- average 18.4mpg over 3500 miles

average of 19.2mg on motorway and transit sections

lowest of 12.4mpg over 3 days of travel in the Ergs

thanks for that chaps, it is not so far off my soft top LR90 300tdi auto.
i get 22mpg around town/commuting and 26/28 on a motorway run.

I'm off to morroco april/may 2011 and working out the fuel costs.

I have had the option on a LC80 series but could not get a straight answer off him on fuel consumption.

I have 1HD turbo (diesel) and on good roads I get 10L on 100KM. With air con it is 25% worse, off road is another 25% worse. In deep sand you feel you have a hole in the tank.
All of the above is fully loaded.

30 mpg is very misleading, and is of no help to any one looking to do any sort of long trip.

A reasonably loaded 80 diesel, be it 12 valve, or the later 24 valve, (1993 onwards) isn't going to return much more than 20 mpg on tarmac.
Sure, you may squeeze a few more, but not really practicable.

Get into any sort of off road travel, adn watch the fuel consumption drop to circa. 16 mpg.

The 80 series, loaded to any sort of long distance travel, is going to totally weigh just less than 3 ton's.
Unloaded weight is very close to 2160kg,

from using LC and LR over quite a few years and terrain the LR will be far better on fuel than the LC . I have managed to get 12mpg with a LC on road doing a fast travel (fire unit) . They have a much bigger engine and are more powerful which is going to be a major factor. As UKVette says 20/22 is average. LR tdi will be doing 28 in same usage. Heavy o/r travel will pretty well double fuel usage if not more depending on severity.

With a 1996 LC 4.2 24V turbo diesel (1HD-FT), our real life experience on this trip (18000 miles, London to Burundi so far) has been 24.5mpg over the usual mix of terrain on BFG AT with roof track with tent + usual load. I have met a one group which is getting a 5% more with a similar set up, but that seems to be the lower end of fuel consumption on th TD.

I've had 2 LC80s a 24v diesel manual that did 28mpg on a run and a little bit less around town on BFG AT, I was very impressed. Didn't have it for very long.

I did an a 4.5EFi on 285 BFG MT and that was awful on fuel! Used to average somewhere between 12 and 15mpg depending on use. 6-8mpg if using it offroad in thick deep mud.

80 series Landcruisers are awesome, just make sure the axle lockers work as the acuator costs a small fortune to replace if it goes wrong, also get the centre diff lock switch and the the PIN trick so that you can use low ratio without automatically engaging centre diff lock.
