Extra Wheels

So I just got back from a Southern/Eastern Africa tour on a motorcycle. Deciding to upgrade to 4 wheels for the next trip which I'm thinking will be a North and South America journey. Just starting to do some research on what to get. I fell in love with Toyotas - especially the Hilux - while living over in Africa. Problem is they are a bit harder to find in the States and I don't know how the Hilux's American cousin - the Tundra - holds up or if I should look into a Land Cruiser or Defender. I'm sure there is a crazy divergence of opinion, just need to get started somewhere.

Hola ,

you will also find toyota hilux in South America , or Toyota scout,
an older type!
Toyotas Tundra are more big and more luxe i think.

Good luck.

The Tundra is a "full size" truck designed for the North American market. V8 engine and large. The Tacoma is a "mid-size" and is more closely related to the Hilux but less heavy duty. The Hilux has not come directly to Canada or the US for several decades. Some have made their way into Canada once they are 15 years old but these are rare. Good Luck.

If you are looking to buy in the US, then you'll be somewhat limited in your choices due to import restrictions.

I would generally stay away from Land Rovers. I'm sure I'll get a lot of hate from the Land Rover lovers, but truth is...in regards to reliability they just can't match Toyota...even if they do look really awesome!

The Land Cruiser of choice is usually the 75, which is totally badass, but sadly, not in the US. The Hilux's cousin, the Tacoma is a great choice. The main differences between these two is the Hilux has a fully boxed frame, where the Tacoma does not. The Tacoma can support less in the bed, but has a larger towing capacity. Probably the biggest downside for the Tacoma (or upside for the Hilux) is the availability of a turbo diesel for the Hilux.

Anywhere you go in the world, you will have parts availability for Toyota...and people that know how to work on them, so that is a plus.

A lot of it will come down to what you want and what you are willing to work on yourself. There are a lot of great choices out there, but the costs and availability will vary widely.
