Do we need to replace Aluminium radiator on HDJ80 LC?

Hi all,

We've got a HDJ80 4.2L Turbo diesel Cruiser which we are getting ready for an overland trip to cape town via east coast of africa. We're leaving in a few weeks time.
Someone has just suggested that we should replace the aluminium radiator with a brass one as they tend to crack and its hard to get them repaired on the road. This is an added expense we could definitely do without ... Do you think this is really necessary? Has anyone else taken an aluminium radiator and had problems??

Thanks in advance!!

Hi - I was told exactly the same thing about MY LC80 (or was I told to replace the plastic top and bottom with brass because the plastic was prone to splitting - can't remember?), but all I can say is I didn't bother and didn't have any problems despite overheating a few times. Then again, when I did overheat I always stopped to let it cool down, so maybe there would have been problems if I'd pushed it.

I did however take the advice to flush the cooling system out and to renew all rad hoses.

Here's where I went - overlandcruiser.net

Mostly tarmac, but enough bad surfaces in that lot to make me think 'if the rad was going to go, it would have done'.
