south africa bike rentals

Hi
Anyone ever have any experience with dualsport adventure and rental or motorbikehire, owned by Craig Marshall in Cape Town, SA? They are quoting pretty good long-term (2 month) rental rates for XT660s but want to confirm they are solid and reputable before I send deposit sight unseen.

Regards,
Larry Simpson

private vs. corporate

Be sure to check on the insurance....a private hire is sometimes not necessarily legal, especially it could void the insurance. We rented (BMWs)from a group called MotoBerlin in South Africa....picked up in Joburg and returned them in Capetown....very painless...

You could ask at this forum of South African bikers:

Not an answer but another question. All tours in South Africa appear to be aimed at big, expensive bikes and big riders.
Does anyone know of tours suitable for shorter riders (but not Harleys).
Alternatively, and better still, can you rent smaller bikes, perhaps Kawasaki KLX 250 etc.

You could try alficox.co.za
He has KTM bikes. Just send him an email. Maybe there is something for you

Otherwise there is BMW MOTORRAD in Pretoria & Cape Town. Maybe they offer the 650cc bike with lowered seat & suspension.

Good luck!

I've used them and they were great. Priced better than most, and we hired 3 bikes and had a great time.

Craig was also very helpful with suggestions on routes, accomodation etc etc.

Motorrad

I was supplied with a bike in May last year (13) and left Centurion heading for Vic Falls. This company was wonderful to deal with. I had a unfortunate rear disk brake problem the second day out (in Botswana) and Motorrad "overnited" a replacement bike to my location. No delays. Great bunch of guys.

I rented an XR650L from Michael in Johannesburg (also from DPA Dual Purpose :: Motorcycle Experiences in Southern Africa) With Michael, cash is king and you can get a much better price

Got a great price, no hassles with the bike or the return. He supplied soft luggage as well.

Not sure what Craig has down in CT, but Michael also had TransAlps and a 950KTM available.

Edit: Electra: DPA also does great tours to different parts of the southern Africa continent and can do 'special' guided tours as well, which normally includes catering and support vehicles.

I rented a 650 Sertao, from Africa4Adventure. 7500 km of trouble free riding from CT to Vic falls and back. The owner Charles is great to work with.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
