Desperate: Angola Visa and Route from Libreville to Cape Town

Hi,

I am currently driving an old Mercedes 300D (a normal car) from Berlin to Cape Town as part of a charity mission (Fab&Vivien – A crazy bet around the world | Fab&Vivien raise money for aid-projects and claim that for each donation of 10€ or more they find 1 person to sing with them in a big mass performance).

I am now in Libreville and desperate because of 2 things: Angola Visa and the route fro here to South Africa.

1. Angola-Visa: I read all posts in this forum and it seems my only option is to DHL my passport to Berlin. Can you guys confirm this? Does anybody knows how long it takes? Is there maybe another option?

2. Route
Let´s say I get the visa. Is there a doable route from here to South Africa? Remember I have a normal car. A route like Ekok-Mamfe would still be OK as I managed to cross this horrible street with the help of a 4x4 which pulled me through the mud holes...

What do you think?
Thanks for all replies in advance
Fabian

Hi Fabian,

Angola visa strikes again.

Okay, there is an overland group called Africa trails. They got the transit visa in Dolisie, Congo, last month.

Everybody else since them has been turned away with no visa. The consul refuses to issue even transit visas now. This is second hand information though, I do not know if things have changed again.

One suggestion: Contact these guys in Luanda Eco-Tur - Angola Tours, Nature Tours, Safaris, Hotels, 4x4 Hire and see if they can help by pulling some strings for you.

That's the only advice I can give.

Good luck.

In regards to route, since you have already made it through Ekok-Mamfe I'm guessing that you should be able to make it.

One suggestion is to NOT take the east route from Franceville to Okoyu in the Congo. It's fun on bikes but sandy and huge ruts from heavy trucks. You would get high centered and there is little traffic to pull you out. Head straight south on the main route instead. There will have been some travellers who have come down there recently so they will be able to comment on the conditions of that road.

If you get your visas figured out, when crossing into Angola, cross at Songololo/Luvo. The road south of Matadi is rough and not recomended. Once you hit the coast, the road has sandy spots so that might be a bit of a challenge, but eventually it gets better as you get closer to Luanda. Southern Angola has some rough roads, but doable.

Angola Visa and route

Hi, we ve made all west africa on a small renault 4L, and the roads in Angola are ok, only in the south not that good, but nothing compared with the Nigeria Cameron road, or Congo Brraza one. Just slow driving!

For the Angola Visa we "fight" for 32 days, and we re portuguese with lot s of good contacts in Angola, check this link where I explain how we got this super hard visa, and some alternatives to go roud Angola. We re already in Cairo! Almost home, fighting with the last visa: Libia.

Tips: Angola | Not 2 Late Trip

Enjoy your trip

Carlos
