Never really been into this speed thingy, but I have to admit that I always had it in my head that Nick Sanders held the record for quickest time for the length of the Americas and RTW, now i've learnt that it is actually husband and wife team, Julia and kevin Sanders. If this is the case then why is Nick Sanders portrayed as being the fastest man around the planet, when clearly he isn't?

It depends on how you count it...

Nick is technically the fastest person, based on actual riding time, whereas I believe Kevin & Julia are based on actual days...

Nick's most recent circumnavigation (not recognized by Guinness BTW as they stopped counting these attempts, as they though it was too dangerous) was based on stopping and starting the clock every time he got on and off the bike. He took the shortest route possible, and (what many people consider) missed out huge chunks that were technically ridable - from what I understand the is a 'minimum distance on land' required for it to count as round the world.

Either way, both are significant achievements - although Kevin & Julia's attempt might be considered more in the spirit of things perhaps?

Nick's most recent trip was 55k miles I believe. His earlier trips were approx. 19k miles, same as Kevin and Julia's. Still epic achievements from all though.



What makes Nick's RTW trips so remarkable is his choice of bike. I spoke to Nick at the recent Motorcycle Expo at the NEC where this photo was taken. Top bloke and anyone who can take an R1 to these extremes and so far away from it's design parameters deserves respect, no question about it.

and on conti something-attacks. i had some of those once & hated them on tarmac, let alone places you need decent grip.

True, had some myself once, dunno how he does it, especially in places like the Sudanese Desert.

They're Conti Road Attacks.

Nick and his bike were actually on the Cambrian Tyres stand (tyre wholesaler), probably as part of his sponsorship agreement with Continental. Cambrian's newsletter proudly states that Nick was getting 11k miles+ per set, but it will take more than that to get R1 owners rushing out to buy them.

i thought it'd be road but the thread is exactly the same on the sport attack so i wasnt going to swear i was right. im amazed at 11k, i melted 3mm off one at 80-90mph smooth motorway riding with much much less luggage in 300miles.
nasty nasty tyres but not as bad as the pilot splurts i had previously.

I think 11k includes off road use and riding them beyond the recommended limit.

I've had Sport Attacks before and really didn't get on with them either. I found they squared off far too easily for a sport-touring tyre. Decent enough grip but not enough feel but still not as bad as Bridgestone BT-020's. Replaced them with budget priced Metzeler Sportec M1's which are very good considering the price.

Tyres I do like very much at the minute are Michelin Pilot Power 2CT's.

Just a technical correction, it is Kevin and Julia SAUNDERS not Sanders. They did the Guiness world record trans americas, their trip is replicated on the DVD. 'The Ride, Alaska to patagonia' and it is good viewing.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
