why I go

You know what 6 bloody years I have been planning to escape again I left the uk in 2000 and now in 2008 still in NZ at last I'm off again june the 14th South America here I come for a year, and you know what I cannot wait to escape. In the last 8 odd years I have gained a mobile a laptop e mail skype friends community a job and you know what it sucks and it sucks you in. I am actually nervous of heading off. I can see why people love the security of their little house in a row of other houses with their new sofa and plasma tv watching all the things happen around the world. ooh isn't it terrible there gosh those poor people etc etc... We clean everything twice and throw food away after it's been in the fridge for a day. I cannot wait to go and sleep in the dirt and eat whatever is around. How the hell did I end up with a choice of 30 different types of cheese, or ham shaved carved on or off the bone fat free sliced thick or thin flavoured bbqed or whatever. I don't actually have to leave the house to get anything I can even shop for my food on the internet and have it dropped off. Brilliant that will save me 30 minutes to spend on my play station.

Well sod it all I'm off trouble is everyone thinks I'm mad so I hope you lot can relate to this

cheers Rich ( we all are allowed to rant once in a while)

Hooray!
For 2 reasons -
1. I'm off to South America in September
2. I'm going on an NX650 as well.
Ranting good. Buying 30 flavours of cheese on the internet bad.

Route?

Rich and Simon,

What's your route thru SA? How long will you be on the road in SA? Might you be in Peru? :thumbup1:

Yeah definitely!
Route is:
Sept 08 -Buenos A
Xmas - TDF
next - Chile

Then Bol, so Peru about April/May I guess..
The plan is about 18 months to Canada so it's all pretty flexible.

meet up

Thats right nigel might keep some sort of blog not sure yet!!!!
To you other folks I leave santiago beginging of August heading north and then east in a wandering sort of way over to Brazil and then down to Ush once it warms up a bit.

sadly the mighty nx isn't coming on this trip it got me from the UK over here and then had a wonderful time for the past 6 years on all the wonderful gravel roads in NZ it's around 80 000 miles now and for the money I would of spent on it to get it back to tip top shape and all the other excuses I can think of to justify it I bought a 2004 dr650.

The NX is an amazing bike and strong as anything but I'm only little and I'm enjoying the low seat and light weight of the dr. At least I now have two bikes.

Keep in touch and we will see if we can meet up at some point richrtw@hotmail.com

getting back on the road

I found getting back on the road, dealing with filth, bugs, poor food, burocracy, etc quite easy because it feels much more like real life than the cultivated stuff Rich is describing. It fits me better and feels more naturally, maybe because I (we?) are suffering from a seriously persistent regressive Nomadic gen! It is who we are.

I am considering now to buy a plasma TV, kill me!

Cheers,
Noel

The way to buy 30 flavours of cheese is definately to do it in the 30 different places the cheese comes from!

Matt :)

Thats asia out then the only decent cheese I ever found was in a dusty tincan called happy cow!!!!

farqhuar 7 May 2008 12:50

Know how you feel NX. I got back to Aussieland from Africa in '78 and it took me 6 years before I headed to South America in '84.

It's now taken me another 24 to get to China / Russia, but I have done a little other travelling in the interim. :thumbup1:

Hope to see you...

Simon and Rich,

Perhaps you will be in Cuzco around the end of June? I will be with a group of Dirt Bike friends there heading out the end of June for a 5,000 km loop within Peru going from Norton Rats Tavern in Cuzco to Norton Rats Tavern/Hostel near Chachapoyas in northern Peru, then back again via a different route. We will hit every geographical area in Peru without repeating any road..

Interested? :mchappy:

I may well be there before end of June but Norton Rats sounds like a good spot to head for anyway...
