Wabash Blues for the HU, music for the Bar

Most bars have music. This version of Wabash Blues was recorded by my Grandpa as a banjo/guitar duet with Velma Truett on .... October 7, 1927 78rpm record.

Let me know if you like it or not. I will post Grandpa's original "Ghost Dance" if you want. Grandpa Harry George invented the TRUJO Banjo, and had to sell to the Gibson Guitar company in the late 1920s because of the Great Depression.

Now, during the Great Recession, 80 years later, hopefully, Grandpa's music will be welcome at the HU Bar. Next round is on me.

Are you high?:eek3:

McCrankpin 4 Jun 2009 10:55

Yes, I like that a lot. Definitely HU Bar music.

Without wishing to hijack your thread I'll offer this: An old English folk song, that even now is argued about. Southerners (like me) claim it's an old Sussex farming song. West Country folk claim it's a Somerset ploughing song.
So it's more for rough camping than the HU Bar.
This version was recorded in London in May 1928 and broadcast later that evening on the BBC. The performer was a gardener from Sussex:

Albert Richardson - The Old Sow (played with a new needle) :blushing:

Then it crossed the Atlantic and Rudy Vallee re-did it for a N. American audience:
YouTube - THE OLD SOW SONG Cyril Smith Rudy Vallee :rolleyes2:

Anyone got a resolution to the Sussex-Somerset argument?

Music, the language of the soul

Flyingdoctor, I will let Grandpa himself respond (via National Four-string Banjo Hall of Fame) to your comment regarding his 78 rpm Colombia Record "Wabash Blues" Please See comments at the end of National Four-String Banjo Hall of Fame write up, thanks

The following excerpt from the National Four-string Banjo Hall of Fame

Go here: The National Four-String Banjo Hall of Fame Museum

"Trujo (made by Gibson) Style A Plectrum Banjo - 1930

Because of its appearance, the Trujo banjo is often unfairly malaigned by banjo players and collectors. Made by Gibson to the specifications of the west coast banjo duo of Harry George and Velma Truitt, the Trujo banjo - with its deep body - was designed specifically to accentuate the bass frequencies of the banjo thereby making the instrument more musically pleasant when used in recordings and radio broadcasts. Also, as Harry George was an early proponent of tuning a four-string banjo like the top four strings of the guitar (known as "guitar" or 'Chicago style" tuning), the depth of the body and unique tonering incorporated into the Trujo banjo were ideal for that particular tuning. Unfortunately, these very positive elements of musicality and design are all too often overlooked when one gazes upon the lion's head (often mistaken for a gargoyle) carved into the peghead which is playfully sticking his tounge out at you! From the Jack Canine Collection"

And I would like to add,

Grandpa was an early radio performer and designed the TRUJO banjo to better carry music over the 1920s radio station microphones. TRUJOs caught on and his original. "Ghost Dance" became a standard and is mentioned in most anthologies of banjo music.

For photos of a TRUJO Banjo, with its' famous lion's peg head go to the Nation Four-String Banjo Hall of Fame referenced above.... Banjo collectors sell and trade TRUJOs for big, big bucks.... tens of thousands of dollars.... several have sold for more than the retail cost of 5 fully equipped BMW GS.

McCrankpin,

Now, your May 28, 1928 BBC broadcast of the english Folk Song was precious. Quite appropriate for the HU PUB.

Thanks, I am forwarding both renditions to a colleague of mine who is a musical anthropologist, specializing in folk songs, to see if he can provide some cultural context and perhaps some philosophical interpretive meaning. Thanks.

And, no you are not hijacking my thread, that would be impossible, for we are both going in the same general direction.

I would invite both of you to visit my other HU Bar thread

Here is the very first tango, with rights to the author copyright in Argentina, with lyrics in English. I wrote the lyrics...

Tango Wind became a Tango Show and was performed at world famous Cafe Tortoni, Buenos Aires.

Credits after the music, check out the bandaleon player, he is one of the very best, the Señorita on vocals ain't bad either. (directly below), we filmed the music video in London and Buenos Aires...

I'm afraid Motorhead doesn't do it for me, but never mind.

Now, Tango Wind, well, that's different altogether! More of what I like. Thanks for that.
I spent a brilliant winter in the south of Spain about 3 or 4 years ago learning tango. Wonderful!

I've plenty of tango CDs in my collection. One example on the fringe: "Di Meola Plays Piazzolla". But also Cafe de los Maestros and Revancha del Tango.

Just to add something different again, I've always liked African music, probably started when I went to Ronnie Scotts years and years ago, bought a ticket from a tout and got in to see Abdullah Ibrahim. First time I ever heard a piano talk and sing!
And my looming Africa trip has intensified that interest. Which led me to find this wonderful item:
A Town Called Addis - Dub Colossus

My favourite CD of the moment. Especially numbers 6 and 8 on the website samples list.

Can't wait to reach Addis Ababa!

McCrankpin, You will reach Addis Ababa

Here is inspiration.

YouTube - Honda Impossible Dream

African music first came to my attention years ago... as the many returned Peace Corps volunteers who had served in Africa, visited my ranch in Arizona. One of the first, a man who had served in Sierra Leone, brought back Bob Marley aand explained Marley's *"One Love" was for all practical purposes the national anthem of Sierra Leone.

Or ,this rendition might be a more appropriate model. This is HD video or beyond... YouTube - Playing For Change: Song Around the World "One Love"

and one of my favorites... YouTube - Bob Marley - Stir it up

Another, who had served in **Cameroon presented me with tapes of village music, and then there was the young woman who had served in Ghanna, and the couple who met and married in Botswana, and soon I was encouraging each volunteer to leave me samples of music from the counties where they served. I have quite a collection of African music, back at the ranch.

** YouTube - Cameroon Music and Images

We had African music almost every night in my recreation building with it's now famous "Spy Bar." Thanks, your music has brought back memories of the best years of my life, thus far.

While in Morocco, Elisa and I spent several nights at the Peace Corps hotel in Marrakech, we slept on hammocks on the roof top, chatted with some very interesting folks and really enjoyed ourselves. As I recall the hotel was named Sidi Sur or something like that.

Hey, might be a great idea if those posting ride tales could send a link for local music too.

Adventure Motorcycling Ballads Wanted

Order a beer, this might take a while,

The sun is shinning upon the north coast of Spain, powered by a gentle breeze that at times, can be a wind so strong it touches everyone.

Perhaps a *BALLAD, written by international motorcyclists (overlanders) ("Those of Horizons Unlimited") could be submitted, selected, put to music, and produced as a music video.... and then sold, along with the travel DVDs and other products that help finance Horizons Unlimited.

Here is a ballad about riding the rails:

McCrankpin.

I have posted the idea, on (Web Site Feedback) to Grant and Susan Grant, of creating a music video from a ballad, with photographs, written by "Those of the HUBB" to find out what they think of the idea.

Meanwhile, I really am enjoying your last 2 selections. Perhaps we can convince Loreena McKennitt or Leonard Cohen to record the ballad, written by "Those of the HUBB."

Below, is an example, video with music, we will probably have to have photographs accompanying the ballad, video would be difficult, but not impossible.

For you.

Harley of Seville

Ted and all happy enough to be here....

After extensive research, I hardly even went to the beach, I found 2 more international motorcycle ballads worthy of the HU BAR.

Here, I am very pleased to present "The Harley of Seville" and the

unforgettable....

" Alabama Motorcycle Mama With a LLama "

As with most treasures, you have to dig through a lot of dirt first, so just try an ignore the 2 really bad comedians introducing these two classic motorcycle ballads, actually, the vocalists are talented.

YouTube - Whose Line: Greatest Hits Songs of The Motorcycle (II)

And, if you enjoyed the 2 classics above, the comedians are much better here as they introduce

"Old Lady ON MY HOG" and the famous 1960s Dylanesque protest song "Asphalt in Chaps" and one more I can't translate.
