center stand on my r100gs

Hey guys and gals. Just bought a 1989 r100gs yesterday. Can anyone tell me if there is a trick to getting the darn thing on its center stand! Please tell me that I'm not a weakling. I just can't seem to do it.:confused1: Thanks

Your not a weakling! Well I dont know, maybe you are but you asked for some one to tell you that you are not.
Ridge Runner, It can be difficult if you dont know how to do it. Try this youtube link. it will give you some pointers. Its with a F650 but the principal is the same.

RR, I had the same probs when I bought mine But it is possible even when the bike is loaded up.
You need to coordinate 3 points of movement at the same time ;-)

Left hand on the handle bar, right hand on the grip under the seat and step with all your weight onto the centre stand, tugging at the handle bar and the under seat grip at the same time, lugging that piece of heavy metal UPWARDS and BACKWARDS.

Probably not the easiest bike to get on the centrestand. It is the only bike I've got on the road at the moment with a centrstand so hard to make a comparison.

First thing is a firm footing on level ground/floor. The handle under the seat is hard to get a good grip on so if it is not too hot I tend to lift under the silencer or the pannier frame if I can get to either. I also tend to roll the bike forward slightly (only a few inches) and then roll it back whilst pushing the stand down to the ground with my right foot. This little bit of momentum helps to lift the rear of the bike until the stand is vertical when, depending on how it's loaded, the bike tips onto the rear wheel and does the rest by itself.

When I damaged my right shoulder on our Africa trip and the bike had 90kgs of luggage on my wife had to help pull it back, so I think normally I must lift a fair bit of the weight with my right arm

Thanks for the advice. Next, I'm going to redesign my kickstand to make that a little easier. A 30" inseam is going to make this bike a challenge. But I will conquer the bumble bee. Thanks again , I have a lot to learn and appreciate your help.

Beside the right technique it helps if the stand work as it should.

The stand itself can be bend and check the bolts and the bushings. It helps to grease the bushings every few years.
