Unhappy pillion ( blown ! )
 

Hi, Just returned from my first trip carrying a pillion, I have travelled all over Europe alone with no probs, but my dearly beloved wife, has been blown and buffeted from pillar to post on the back of my R1200 GS Adventure, me being rather short ! have the lower seat, so my wife is exposed ! as you can imagine, my GS has the factory fitted tall screen fitted, has anyone else had this issue, and can it be overcome with the Touratech screen extension ? we are heading through France to a hopefully sunny Spain and the thought of her wobbling, bobbing, bucking and spinning around behind me is not one I relish ! any comments gratefully received.

Just a thought but a smaller screen could be the answer,
I have an old GSA screen you could have foc if you fancy cutting it down to experiment with

That's my thought also; the buffeting around head level can be the most uncomfortable, and caused by a high screen, while turbulence around the body level can be quite OK.
I would try taking the screen off all together as a start point and a really cheap way of finding out what difference can be made.

Think you'll have to experiment. Unless you can get to the fundamentals of motorcycle aerodynamics with your slide rule and a passenger.

As an example, on a standard Honda Dominator, I always had a brilliant ride in the wind, right up to, if I remember correctly, 100mph at times.
True, the wind was strong, but I suppose I had enough arm and hand strength to hang on OK and enjoy the sensation.

But then I took a passenger. Nothing high speed, maybe 60mph max. And my passenger always had a nice smooth ride.
But me! Once over 50mph the wind would batter my head from side to side so powerfully I just had to let it happen. And slow down if it was so bad I couldn't see properly.

My passenger would ask, "why do you bounce your head side-to-side so much when we're on the open road? It seems a really strange thing to do!"

So to repeat, I think you just have to experiment. Probably with different screens, or no screen, as suggested.

She might try scooching her butt back and leaning over more at higher speeds. Tilting her head down may help too. Also is her helmet fitted properly & strapped tight enough? When we did our first trip it was on a sport bike and I had my husbands old helmet which was way too big. It's amazing how unstable that can make you feel. Once I got a new helmet it was soooo much better!
