Silverton Notes -2007

Patrick.....you asked about the Silverton HU Meet last year - I attended from north of Calgary enjoying lots gettin to Silverton including the only glacier in Nevada, Utah Hwy #12, Burr Road, Moab, Ophir Pass, among others....meeting site is the local ski hill lodge which was great - no showers - lots of good camping at hand and only a short walk to town amenities.

I used town food (made up some pico de gallo) but the caterer's fare looked very tasty and word was that it was.

About 140 people showed (roughly) - good variety of folks - Oz, US, Canada, Ireland, etc. Lots of informal groups got together to go ridin around the many passes in the area - lots of variety (difficulty) - and lots of stories from those jaunts - lots of others spent all day out in the 'parking lot garage' - it did rain a little off and on during the meet which is probably pretty expected in the mountains. Lots of tourists in the town.

I stayed mostly around the event using it as a resting spot after the run down. I did a short video presentation on the Great Divide route.

I'd go again in a heartbeat cos I can combine the trip with travel along new routes. Will miss this year though - will be at HU Canada West and with trips planned in Idaho, Alberta and other commitments, July in Silverston just doesn't work.

I'd highly recommend the event - particularly because of the riding in southern Colorado and Utah - some of the best there is. Think about doing a presentation at the event. You've posted lots of good stuff on the site - I'm sure folks would enjoy hearing directly about some of your Baja runs or other Bike based experiences.

I went to Canada west 2007 as I live a days ride from Nelson. Love the meetings and waned to bit more riding to the next one. This one looks to fit the bill with out getting me in to too many problems at work. Lived in Colorado for a long time last time biked there I had a 30cc moped did 25MPH but got 150MPG not much fun pushing it up the pass. Biggest trip I did on it was 500 miles in 2 weeks wild camping a milk crate and a back pack held my gear more fun than it sounds.
Going to go bit bigger and faster this time.

I'll be there. Looking forward to it as I've never made a hubb event yet.

Silverton

Silverton is a small town, tourists come and go on the train from Durango. Great setting at 9K feet surrounded by big mountains. Great pavement riding and really neat jeep roads. As far as a shower just go north a bit and jump in the hot springs. I was at Silverton last year and will be there this year if at all possible.

I won't be there because I'll be in India waiting on my Duc. I'm only posting because I'm excited about getting onto the road again.

Oh yeah, I'm going to swipe one of your ideas, Bill. Instead of putting a dinosaur on my front fender, I'll zip tie a couple of Ultraman toys to my forks. There's also a slim possibility that I'll be adding a Vespa-sized sidecar to the 250.

To Silverton

I'll be headed to Silverton shortly after Canada West. Merritt's only about an hour from where I live (so that's no fun) and Silverton sounded like a great way to get out of my own backyard. Haven't decided on a route yet... but through that BC-Colorado stretch, almost any route is going to be spectacular.

Two meetings in less than a month. Woohoo! :mchappy:

Wahooooo!

Definitely going to be at SILVERTON. I only live 4 hours away so I won't miss it. Talked a buddy with a GS into making the jaunt. I also talked him into Belize in '10 so you guys have to show him how awesome the idea of RTW is.....see you there!:thumbup1::funmeteryes:

Leaving Bay Area July 7th .... or so

Any help? Hope to get there by Greyhound.

Dave: sorry you won't make the Silverton meet, hope to see you on the road some day. Patrick: if you use I-70 you can enter CO at Glenwood Springs- a cool town with a popular hot spring. Doc Holiday is buried at a little cemetery near town, it's not too hard to find. There are good cafes and restaurants in the "downtown." From Glenwood Springs you can take the 550 south to Silverton, this is a nice ride. If you like snobs, you can find some in Aspen- stop by and roll your eyes! The town of Ouray is a very cool place, it also has a hot spring that should be tempting after a few long days in the saddle. Ride safe guys, H.
