saw me coming - Moroccan rug

A bit off topic I guess, but after plenty of searching and not knowing this was the only place i could think of asking :helpsmilie:

So i got suckered in Fes by our guide to buy not 1, not 2 but 3 rugs :nono: OK we are keeping 2 for the house, but the 3rd I planned on selling upon my return... that was the end of 2008.

I cannot be the only one to get suckered, what have others done to shift their rugs (hopefully for a profit)? I was thinking of asking on the expedition portal to see if any of our American friends wanted a piece of North Africa textile.

make no mistake, this is not a thin wall hung thing, its a Rabati plush pile carpet.

what are your thoughts? I think ebay is out of the question. was going to try an art auction, but i know nothing of these things.

:helpsmilie: appreciated. need the $$$ to fund our Vladivostok trip in 2013 :thumbup1:

Thankfully I have never had room on the bike to carry one Home :oops2:

palace15 23 Jan 2010 22:26

I found that telling them I couldn't carry a carpet on the bike didn't deter their persistence, as they smartly replied that they could post them to the UK or anywhere else for that matter.

And there's no point in saying you've no cash as even the Berbers take Visa...

works for me

"I have no home or any possessions other than on my bike, so I have nowhere to send it, nowhere to use it, nowhere to keep it".

Souvenir-less after all these years...

Taking a 'guide' was the first mistake.:oops2:

When you say you "know nothing of these things" what possessed you to buy it (them) anyway?:eek3:

So "Hello my friend, I am a student, come and see my brothers carpets, just looking, no need to buy, ..sure, we will post them probably; give me your credit card. We can clone it very quick. You are from England? Great country nice people. My friend".

I see you are the UK. This guy Sasanian Persian Rugs deals in Persian (Iranian) carpets, but he knows his stuff and could most probably suggest a dealer who would be interested in your Rabati carpet. If it a genuine high quality item, it will always fetch a good price.

o, i dunno, Have you personally tried to navigate through the Medina in Fes? Im glad we had someone there.

what I meant by knowing nothing was that I am not an arts/antique/rug dealer, I dont know how this trade works. So I dont know where to start by finding someone to take this off my hands. I actually wanted to buy 1 to bring home to furnish the house and keep for a long time. I did a bit of reading so knew what I was buying. I just should not have got carried away and bought 3!

Those sellers are so 'kin clever, they could probably tell what part of London I am from. Could not say I was from Yorkshire, even if my life depended upon it!

The Medina in Fes? :palm:Yes, and no guide, just as most people do. It's good to do it yourself; take a risk even tho' it's no risk. Use the sun as a guide to direction. You may not know where you are but you wont be lost! It says so on the Tshirt. Orif you're really nervous, pay some kid a few dirhams to pilot you out. But dont go to his cousins/brothers carpet shop only looking.

You are right that you are not a dealer - none of us can better the guys whose livelihood it is to flog as much as they can to you - and thats what theyll do if you let them, X3. You are an expert in whatever your field is and so are they. So you wont be buying a bargain - be sure of that. Very sure.

You want a profit on this? Good luck!

I'd say you got a worthwhile lesson and thats your profit.
