Whats the deal with Carnet?

I have searched here and got a quote of the site, I think I have a basic understanding of them ,,,,,but....Im not to bright so please help The bike will be from Australia to start with.

The quote had 2 options or a 7000$ used bike on my dream trip through the canadian CAA or what ever it is

1: 3500$ incl 950$ admin fees that money is all gone ?wont see any of that back right?

or

2: Put up 18000!$ as a bond and get 17050$ back when the bike returns to its country of origin (950admin fee)

My question is if I go for option 2 what happens to my bond if I wreck big time or the bike is stolen? do I forfeit that 18000$?

Sorry if these are basic question but I cant seem to find the answers and you guys seem like a friendly bunch of miscreants :confused1:

It would help if you filled out your profile, but I will make an assumption you are from Australia, as that is the only country you mention.

I am an Ozzie, and have bought a carnet for my 12 months trip and flew the bike to Europe.

The carnet is a passport, do a search on here, everything is explained about what it is . Basically it is a piece of paper that says you will remove your bike from that country and not sell it there

But, you need to contact the RACV, RACQ or whatever in your state of Oz. They then ask you for your bike evaluation, this needs to be supplied by a 3rd party, I paid $20 for my evaluation at a bike shop and they wrote a letter saying my bike was worth $3,200. In fact it actually was.

Where you are running into trouble is the bikes worth.

Some of the countries you will enter want a guarantee of at least 350% of the bikes worth left on deposit when you enter the country. This is so that you then are foreced to take the bike out when you leave and get your deposit back.

BUT, the carnet negates all that. You pay the RACQ(for example using my case in fact) I paid $1,000, of that there is a fee of $400 which is the 'cost' that you pay for the service and privalage of having the carnet, non refundable. When I bring the bike back to Oz and hand in my carnet, they will refund me the other $600

As I said earlier, my bike was worth 3200, if yours is worth 15,000, then your deposit and other costs go up of course. It helps to get a 'nice' evaluation before getting a carnet. But, do not bring a 25,000 dollar BMW that looks like factory condition and expect a border person to believe the 3,000 dollar evaluation, thay are not stupid.

btw, I just entered Malaysia, this is the LAST country on my journey home and I have just had to use the first page of my carnet. No other country anywhere on my trip has asked for or needed one. Is it still worth it? Well, without it I would not be able to enter this country. They are very efficient and have a procedure book that they followed whern they filled it out. So yes, to me, the carnet was expensive and I had to carry it for 55,000km, but without it I would have been turned back at the border and would then have had to ride back to Bangkok and flew me and the bike home from there.


And to answer one of your questions. If the bike is lost, stolen, damage beyond repair, then the onus in on you to get a police report explaining that fact. Then there will be no cost to you when you leave the country without the bike.

If in fact you do lose/get stolen/damage the bike beyond repair and DO NOT get a police evidence chain, then the automobile club you bought the carnet from will have to pay up that countries penalty import costs(up to 450% in some countries). They then will bill you when you come home!

What happens when you have the bike stolen?

You go to the Police and make a report.
If you have a carnet you then go to the Customs people and make a report.

What happens if the bike is destroyed?
If you have a carnet you then go to the Customs people and make a report.

Payment from your carnet will depend on the Customs people - do they believe you? There may be some delay .. to see if the bike turns up or while 'they' instigate. Ask the Customs people at the time .. possibly there might be some way you can help?

Same rules for cars etc.

That is in general. You will find the 'rules' vary by country. Don't worry about it... there is nothing you can do about it so why worry. If you get into that situation ... then ask the Police.. and they might take some time to get the right answer .. not something that common.

Back in the old days (and possibly now too) in some countries your vehicle was stamped into your passport .. so you had to get immigration involved too.

Ok thanks guys, Travellingstorm I have read your adventures here ofcourse great work. If you ever find yourself in Brisbane and thirsty the first s are on me. You got Great deal on the Vstorm for 3200! haha. I'm a kiwi living in Aussie btw

Well Im thinking a rough 09 klr 650 worth about 5000$ I have a good friend at a bike shop of course which could make that 4K? Would this amount be meant to include farkles or just the bike? I'll lean toward the later obviously,

Yeah I guess the problem is India, Iran where they want 450% the value of the bike.

I was worried about putting up 18000$ then being at the merci of some customs agent/coppa, begging for a police report or stamp to recover my 18K if it does actually get stolen in India/Iran

But I now realize Oz has its own CdP and it doesnt seem to bad Awesome thanks again

My bike had a true evaluation at 3200, it was what I bought it for from the insurance company after I wrote it off. The cost did include everything on it and should incorporate the accessories.

I never went to India or Iran, I did the norhtern route Russia china etc

Beer, what , I better get there before you leave then eh
