Please don't laugh but....

What is a piste? I've tried googling and it comes up with a load of ski references. Am i right in thinking it just means going off road?

So I just bought Sahara Overland and it talks loads about pistes...are there also roads or are the pistes what you follow?

Sorry for the stupid questions, a complete beginner over here :)

pistes are tracks;
whether ski, off road or as in racing circuit.
When you take your bike down to the track, you are taking your moto to the piste for a good day out.

It is French coming from Italian originally and quite common on signs around Europe.

Sahara Overland, yes, you will find many ski pistes that are gearing up for climate change season :freezing:

it's not just going off road.

A piste is an established route, it may be a track but there may be nothing except the occassional oil drum in the sand to mark the route.
As with skiing, you can go off piste, which would mean leaving the established route and heading into the boonies!

This is a piste

It's the French word for "track".
