Money no object
With money being the controller of most peoples limits, what would you do if it was no object (travel wise).
Go RTW, every continent, every country, what bike, equipment, would you get bored??? Personally i think i would just keep going until it stopped being enjoyable. Who knows if that moment would ever come? |
I'd find myself a little corner of the world that is very dear to me, and then travel where I please! That way, I'd always have a nice base to come back to when I want a bit of stability/predictability in life, or just a mattress I'm familiar with!
Where? Everywhere! The less touched by modernity the better!! To start with. Bike? Probably a hack as I'd want my wife and dogs with me!! Equipment? What I've got now: it suits our needs fine! Now, where's my lotto ticket? |

If money were no object I think half the fun of being on the road would be gone!
When things come easy they are appreciated much less in my opinion :biggrin: Wouldn't mind not having a job taking up my time though :thumbup1: |

We set out on a trip a few years ago with a chunk of dosh that got eaten up by the vehicle not being what we thought it was, so big mistake, big loss, learning experience is one description.
In sorting out various problems my wife and I have taken all this time and have only been through the UK, France, Spain (for a week) and now Morocco. Had our initial plan been sucessful what we've taken 29 months doing may only have taken one. And despite everything have no regrets. With money no object I think speed would be the crucial thing, there will be no time limit, so you will experience so much more. :) |
I usually seem to get a bit bored after a few months. I like to travel because it's a change. Break the routine. But you quickly develop a routine when travelling as well. If the riding isn't challenging and I can't see a contrast on a daily or several daily basis I seem to get bored.
Also agree on the budget thing. To me this makes it a bit of a 'mission' which adds to the experience. Off course you can choose to add contrast by staying in a resort for a few days if money is no object, and camp for several after. Would be nice to have that choice though. But the reality is that very few seem to get that, and many that do make that kind of money are so institutionalised they keep working. That I can't understand. |

Time
Not having to save for a couple of years for a trip, doing some mind numbingley boring job or dangerous in my case (I work in Iraq) would be a bonus. Also knowing that you don't have to immediatley find a job to keep your head above water on the return home, do I have somewhere to live? Can I pay bills? etc, etc a cushion so to speak.
Would the trip itself change...? Damn right it would!! Not necessarily 5* hotels and the plush line but the limitations would cease, there's no rush and it's a big world! Whether your frugal with money or spend like a rock star wouldn't make a difference, we've all heard of multi millionaire London beggars who still beg and sleep on the street, but the choice to do that would make the difference without a doubt! You can still ride a £50 bike with a million in the bank but you can't ride a £million bike with only £50 in the bank!! I'd ride a Tenere, new or old but the gold alloy rims.............. yes.. they'd be plated REAL GOLD!! ha ha ha!:Dand when I got bored I'd have my man-servant do tricks! |

I am not sure an unlimited budget would change much about my travels, apart from making them for frequent. I find after about 6 months the exotic ceases to be exotic for me and it is then time to come home and sample normality.
Secondly staying in cheap hotels and hostels and eating where the locals do you get to meet more local people and other like minded travellers than I would expect to in 5 star hotels. |
No change
I don't think an unlimited budget would change much if anything. I would still live much the same life, but be more relaxed if I could actually afford it. I may even continue working occasionally because, although there is a lot of satisfaction in overcoming problems on the road, there is also satisfaction for me in a job well done.
The key to happiness is not in getting what you want, but in learning to want what you have, and I'm pretty damned close to that thanx (but not quite there yet). |
On the 5* thing - there are some really local-focused yet luxury places that aren't 5* but that cost more than a long-term traveller can usually afford, and that would be fun to check out if the money were endless. We've done some of them on shorter trips, and they're not your typical 5* "characterless" place.

If money was no object, I could take advantage of the more expensive adventure side trips.
25k to climb Everest? Spend a Ski season hitting every trail possible in the Alps? Buy a yacht and sail the Med & Caribbean? Have a motorcycle on board? Cash or Credit? |
