Lonley Planet/ Thorn tree
I have been planning my Africa overland part of my RTW tour and when checking on the africa pages of the hubb I find lots of ref to ( I posted that info on thorn tree for you to look at....)

Is it my imagination but when you go to lonley planet its full of negative usless info and all the relevent things you need info on has been removed.. does anybody use the thorn tree by lonley planet any more???

All I wanted to know was is it posible to travel overland from sudan to chad.? as do not want to go by boat from sudan up the nile.

So do you post useful information on Thorntree, or merely go there to mine information, then complain when you don't find what you're looking for? That's a loaded question, but it seems to me a fair one. The best way to have a forum which meets your needs is to set a good example for others to follow.

I post on various Thorntree forums. I also use information I find there. But FWIW you're unlikely to find anything on routings from Sudan to Chad there. It's not really that sort of place. In fact, you might not find anything of that sort here, either.

Good luck with your search. I'll look forward to reading here about what you come up with.

was not meantto put the forum down, but it seems that a lot of the info that you have :- re photography permits and many other bits you need to know to stay within a countries laws is removed on a regular basis and is put back up by the person or persons who originally posted.

The INFO i was looking for was on the dafur region of sudan and the border with chad and was it now possible to cross into chad as the last time i was in that region was in in 1983 and back then it was possible but now its ???????

The last time I posted on lonley planet was about 3 years ago, That was when i backpacked around india.


yes they do have good info but lots of the guides are out of date


nothng against lonley planet but lots of usless info but that happens on all the forums.... for backpackers it is a brilliant site.. For RTW motor/ motorcycle travel not so good.

But then everybody wants different things from this

Yup, guidebooks are way out of date, plus it's all aimed at backpackers, not riders. Not to mention the fact that hardly any posters venture off the well-beaten track.

I don't know about stuff being removed, though. They changed formats a few years back and eliminated a lot of stuff, including usernames. But AFAIK everything since is accessible. Do Google searches using "Lonely Planet Thorn Tree" or something similar among your search terms.

But I still doubt you'll find anything useful about travel through Darfur or Chad. This is not the fault of the forum.

Only wish I could at this moment, but Landrover and bike not ready... HOPE the sudanese gov leave the dafur region alone.... will but be keeping my eye on this as do want to re visit dafur again as it is a part of the world that should be protected...

thanks for your input.. horizons is still the best place for uptodate info for both biker and 4x4 overland...

You should also keep in mind that as good/deficient as the HUBB and Thorntree are in some areas; its based on the contributions of its members, biased towards those that communicate in English and caters to specific styles of travel.

If you want to go through an area and and want more information, check forums in that are based in languages for that area. For West Africa, le Routard can be a resource....

BUT ultimately you have to ask yourself the question, how much information do you need? There's a lot of noise out there...and in travelling through some of these countries...less is more.

BTW Mark, the some of the travellers on the Thorntree can do some truly off the beaten path travels as they aren't encumbered by worrying about what to do with their landy/moto...while on that goat path.
