Is there demand for a 'secret' HUBB?

I need a version of the HUBB without pictures, ads, colours, emoticons etc. so I can look at it at work when I'm supposed to engaged in the Government's business.

A version that looked like a really really boring report from a govt. agency would be great.

In a small font size so you could only read the "My BMW is super," and the "Nah, it's rubbish, my Yamaha is the dog's," and the "You must be kidding, the only bike capable of a RTW is a Honda," replies and other associated nonsense that graces the pages of this illustrious website, if you are sitting in my seat.

Currently, you see, I have to have the awareness of a Spitfire pilot during the Battle of Britain, and it's hurting my neck. At any moment a 'Hun' might appear out of the sun (my manager might spring from behind the xerox machine) and catch me berating some poor sod with a different taste in bikes to mine. Right now, anyone within twenty feet of my terminal can see 'Horizons Unlimited' emblazoned across my screen and lots of little pictures of people riding motorbikes in deserts.

Perhaps you could have a blank banner that you could custom fill with your own J-Peg? For instance I could put some 'Scottish Government' graphics in there.

Anyone else feel the need for a 'secret' HUBB or am I the only one with an intolerably poor work ethic?

Matt :)

My favorite cheat ......

My favorite cheat is to copy and paste websites into notepad and read them there.

Not so good for the HUBB as you tend to need to surf it. But for long blogs it's great.

But yes, a low graphics version would suit me perfectly.

proxy vote

you could do it by creating a proxy that you can direct pages too that will replace images with those on a seperate database and transform text etc - you could get it to look like a government site, try disguising it as the ONS site - nothing makes people turn away faster!

Unfortunately I don't know how this can be done, but have seen a friend's that you can direct to any site and it replaces all images with pictures of cats and changes the spelling to make it look like a 4 year old wrote it. Very geeky but quite amusing nonetheless.

Don't forget that the tech guys always know what you're looking at......

Matt,

i had to laugh... while reading your post, I'm sitting at work with simalar "tacticaly aware" state of readyness... So I tend to agree with you!

And Mathew.. nice tip about the ctrl w ..... :thumbup1:

On a more practical point a low graphics version would be great for those on the road stuck with slow/over priced internet. (which i thinik this has been brought up several times in the past?? )
I suspect this could be a bit of a problem from an advertising perspective??????(maybe Grant's comments here?) ...It's that money that helps this website and forum remain operational.

Just found out what Ctrl-W does

use a text browser (lynx), if you can at work.

a low-res/face-less version is possible with an alternative css and some apache re-write rules for image links. ie any image link is re-written with a link to a blank image. you could make sponsors images exceptions.

Or (firefox) just turn off the style page (View/Page Style/No Style) and turn off images. Make a right mess of the site, but you can still get around. Reduce the text size too.

I guess IE has similar, but I don't use it.

As DougieB says, the easy way is to install the developer bar on your browser and turn the images or style off.

Another way is to install something like Greasemonkey if you use Firefox - it transforms web pages however you program Greasemonkey to do so.

You mean people look at this forum when they should be working ?
Whatever next.

Pumbaa 6 Mar 2008 23:05

Splendid idea!!!

Surfing at work...:nono:?? LOL

That would be a great idea...something like a toggle button on te main page where you can switch bewtween the 'swish' hubb or the 'plain' hubb.

Also try to use 'Alt' and 'Tab' keys. Press Alt first and while holding it down, press Tab...

It might also be an advantage to folks using internet cafe's with very slow download speeds, when out on the road for example. And as they charge by the hour for use anything that cuts even 10% off download time would be a bonus.Just a thought....

Also a government worker I just call it research what can they say I am investigating worldwide traffic trends. The jokes page is a bit harder to explain but then everyone needs a good laugh now and then.

Flyingdoctor 12 Mar 2008 08:38

I'm not going to mention what part of the Government I work for but I have been known to stay logged in on this and other motorcycle sites for a whole night shift! I don't do this anymore, people have been sacked for "internet Abuse". Now we have mobile internet dongles for our laptops and carry on regardless. One guy even has a pretty good career as an internet poker player! I do have to be prepared to "jump into action" if needed though.

missappropriation of funds

Now if all you civil servants stopped playing on the net and did some work the rest of us wouldn't have to pay so much tax and we could afford to go traveling more:mchappy::mchappy::mchappy: or perhaps you just do it during your lunch break:rofl:
