In Germany with a broken shock
 

HI Everyone
set off on the road to Mongolia on Friday morning and I am currently in Nurnberg with a broken shock absorber - any helpful hints for this part of Germany?
I am riding Thelma- my 1992 paralever BMW R80GS.

Ruddy heck - I thought you said that bike had just been rebuilt? ! not a good start- bad luck- Try contacting the German community Tiff - they'll know

If you can afford it - Try contacting wilbers.de they are up near Osnabruck but should be able to get you a quality shock posted and with you within 48 hrs. If you explain your situation. These are very good quality shocks and can be factory set to suit your load and weight requirements there are various models of shock from £350 to £750. so not cheap but make a worthwhile investment for your bike moreso on the trip your taking on.

There are also any number of Hagon shocks available on E bay new and reasonable prices.

As I suggested to the bloke in Morocco with the same problem - simply for a get-you-home gadget, get a pipe cut to the length of the shock, with holes at each end; in fact, a copy of the shock, but rigid.

This, I know, does not fix the problem, but as these shocks seem to give so many problems, it might be wise to carry one of these around. 25-35 mm pipe should do it. Or whatever you can get. You should then be able to get to the next source of shock fixing.

Jeez - broken shock in UK, next day in Belgium and now in Germany!
How will you get to Mongolia?

Sorry, can't help you but I would think that the middle of Germany, would be the best place in the world, to break down with a BMW :smartass:

If it makes you feel any better about your situation, I,m on a similar trip to you (also on gabes email list), and am stuck in belgium with a knackered cylinder head on my dr350...

And on that note if anyone reading this has a dr350 head they,ll part company with...

Get your shock sorted out or else your "swim team" won't be happy with you when you arrive in UB...

I busted mine early on in Mongolia...and it accelerated the wear of my final drive splines AND universal joint on my drive shaft...not to mention the oil leak will make your rear disc brake unusable...if you have one.

Its not a show stopper...you just won't get any damping...but you can still ride he bike...just be prepared for a lot bounce in your ride;)

In the long run it’s cheaper to buy a good unit it’s possible to overhaul.
Personally I would recommend Øhlins (46DRS or better).

There is a happy outcome (hopefully), in that my Wilbers shock absorber is due to be delivered tomorrow:D
and I got it at a cheap price as it was never collected by the guy who origianlly ordered it.
