I built the Long Way Down croc farm and caught the three leg croc

Hi there,

Does anyone really give two hoots? I doubt it but here goes!

I was working in Zambia as a Landie mechanic and got offered a job to work on the local croc farm. It was just started, had some ponds, 20 crocs and they needed a manager.

I got stuck in and a year later when I left we had about 70 crocs and the place was 95% finished.

The croc shown in the Long Way Down series with only three legs I caught in a trap down by the Maramba River, next to Livingstone, Zambia.

Here is a link to watch the croc footage from the episode that is my only claim to fame.

BBC Media Player

I have just put another post on my blog and dedicated it to this subject.

Relocation, sometimes necessary

Thanks for reading and giving a damn.

Good point!

Well thought of, a hole in my claim to fame.

Shortly after I left Zambia the local gaming authority took over the capture of problem crocs and as far as I know the old man isn't as busy.

But I suppose it could of also happened during a feeding frenzy in the actually enclosure.

If the footage was clearer I could look for a bad scar it had on the side of it's head as well. The reason I know so much about this one croc is that it was the first I caught on my own.

Anyway. It was all good fun.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
