love the sponsored ads on the page when I visit, apparently I need to lose belly fat, join an outlaw motorcycle gang and start a global war. Are these not meant to be picked to appeal to the members of each page?:rofl::innocent:

So as a confirmed ignoramus, why would I want to "like" any page in particular? I'm regularly here on the forums: what more could Facebook offer me? FWIW, I've little interest in outlaw motorcycling, weaponry or other targeted advertising (although I could certainly spare some belly fat, if it came to that).

And what does Horizons gain when I "like" it? What gain when I click on that page or any other? I understand the concept of viral marketing, more or less, but no one's yet made a persuasive case for my participation.

Anyone?

IF you like the page you will normally get updates from that page from their news feeds on your own profile page as well as mesages if they send any and your friends on facebook will also be aware you like that page.
The adverts are nothing to do with the hubb page or the hubb at all they are generated by facebook I just thought it was funny they told me to lose some weight, dress like a pirate, buy a harley and invade another country.

Still not seeing it. When I look at that page I see a whole lot of fluff consisting in part of duplications of what I see far more efficiently here, in part of all sorts of people jumping on board to admire each other ("Grant and Susanstopped by the Touratech-USA headquarters this afternoon. What an amazing couple! We're really looking forward to working with them in the future. Stay tuned!") with what seems like an excess of enthusiasm combined with deficiencies in critical thinking. In the first case I'd rather see it here, relatively un-diluted; in the second, I'd rather not see it at all. And I'm not concerned about whether my friends know what I like; if they haven't figured it out by now, why should I worry about it?

Still wondering. Am I especially obtuse in some way? Facebook has a place in my life, but I don't see the appeal of this one.

PS: I know that targeted ads are the wave of the future, as well as the reason that all sorts of handy stuff like Google exist, but they always seem to think I'm someone I'm pretty certain I'm not. At best, they're trying to sell me stuff I already purchased months ago. Probably this is just another sign of my increasing lack of relevancy to the workings of the world. I'm ok with that.

IT is just another format some may like it some may not hence the choice of clicking the like button. I agree on what you say on the adds though, now apparently i need to go to the cinema and meet a mature english woman for "relationships". I mean way to go on targetting me , Im now an overweight unattractive meglomaniac poser, I hope the next ones for dignitas

As pictish has said, "liking" a page adds to what you'll see in your news feed. It also gives Facebook an indication of your interests, which is one of the mechanisms their advertisers use to try and target you (mostly not very well).

The benefit to Horizons of lots of interested people "liking" their page is that it provides another way of distributing news and information - often linking back to the HUBB for the full detail on a particular discussion thread.

The HU page has nearly 1,100 "likes" up to now and the figure keeps rising, so it's useful to some people.

Some people aren't into Facebook (or Twitter and all the rest), but may be very regular users on the HUBB. Some may be regular users of both. Others may visit the HUBB very infrequently, choosing to rely on Facebook (etc.) for important updates/discussions that they can dip into. Everyone has their own preference.

If you're not into Facebook and are satisfied with what you get from the HUBB directly then you're not missing out - at least not on HU-related stuff.

Like Markharf I'm "not yet onboard" with facebook so I'm not sure what I'm missing. Am I missing anything? Is there stuff turning up there that's not being posted on here? If there is then is the facebook hubb going to compete with this site and we'll have to dodge from one to the other, or if it isn't then what's the point other than acting as a more public version of the pm system.

Maybe I'm the one that's missed the point (more likely, :confused1:). If so, perhaps someone could spell it out (in very simple language please!)

and why would I want that?
I run my own HOSTS file and that gets rid of most advertising. Blocking Googladservices is another good thing to do.
I don't want these "people" to know what my surfing habits are. Full stop!

redboot its does not add the hubb page to your "friends list" and I certainly havnt had any attempts by people on there to send friend requests.

My god people its just another option, it puts the hubbs presence into another media form, no one is forcing you to click the like button or even join facebook.

I was just asking some questions in all sincerity. It does seem a bit odd that no one's come on here and claimed their membership in the community of 1,100 stating why they punched the button and what they're getting out of it. That's really what I've been wondering, and I still don't really get it. Probably, that's just fine.

Just a sign of the times, social media is exploding, i.e. web 2.0 and the works. What's the saying? It used to be that we found products on the web... Now products are finding us...

I'm no interweb wizard or anything. But, I find the development pretty cool, actually mind-boggling-cool. All it tells me, that HU is on the cutting edge (...or close to it :cool4:)

Even if you block seeing the ads, they know who and where you are. Publicly they say they can narrow down your location to 30 meters. If you want to be hidden, you have to go the full Bin Laden and use flashdrive and a remote computer.
