Should probably be in the Bar, but not a bad effort.

What frustrates me is that HD (and Guzzi for that matter) have a nice simple motor and with a tiny bit of effort could mount it in a basic frame, add bought in forks and wheels and hey presto, go anywhere, do anything touring bike (Guzzi are closer to getting this). Instead every single model has something that needs fixing from belt drive that can't do stones, to tiny fuel tanks, to chrome bits that simply need unbolting and binning. Triumph are now copying the daft bits!

I can't get my head round why Harley can't see the way out of the ups and downs of the US cruiser market is a Vincent style european bike with basic, touring and cafe racer variants. Still, guess they feel comfortable selling T-shirts.

I nearly bought a Sportster back in 2004 but salesman totally put me off with a big push on petrol preservative for the "closed season", a good deal on an upgrade when I felt I needed a "big" bike and so many vouchers for logo'd clothing. This to a bloke who rode in on an XT600 in February; clueless.

I loved the commercial.

I have a 1996 Moto Guzzi California 1100 and rode 2 up, from Yorkshire, through France, over the Alps to Verona and then home to Denmark. It was the first time we had ever sat on a Guzzi and it was great.

It is a go anywhere touring bike and the most comfortable I have sat on and has good suspension and a good size tank.

What do Guzzi need to do? I am confused. No I don`t want one of those German soulless machines either.

Guzzi need to fit wheels that don't restrict tyre choice and make the same bike for more than a week at a time IMHO. I can use a Bonneville in snow or mud for the simple reason it has the same wheel sizes as those Bavarian tractors. I was doing that while the old boys Guzzi was sat waiting for parts from the clowns by the lake, who didn't actually realise they'd fitted 2001 brake parts to a handful of 2002 bikes until the third attempt. The local dealer thought having a bike waiting for parts was just part of the "Italian bike experience" and was fine so long as my dad didn't miss any bank holiday ride outs. The problem was finally solved by a parts expert at the dealers in Cornwall (300 miles away) who guessed based on the engine number that this was an unplanned "special".

So, yes I'd take the Guzzi anywhere there is a recovery service, but the hobby bike service levels and attitude ruin it IMHO as something you could take say into Africa without an expert level of knowledge on that exact bike and personal contacts in the parts suppliers.

Go anywhere to me means either it won't break or I can fix it if it does with support I can get. This gives me a bigger choice that just BM or Yamaha but so far wouldn't include Guzzi, Harley, Ducati etc.
