Think that is a yearly event and long finned pilot whales are also hunted in the same way,
did not know they did dolphins[same family so article may have got them mixed up] as well. The meat is split up among the islanders for winter and the rest is given to old folks homes ect, all body parts are used and its a tradition dating back to viking times.
Not very nice.

Japan does worse in many ways to marine mammals similar herding and slaughter of Dolphins Check out : The Cove Movie: Welcome , then there is the whaling and the unbelievable amount of overfishing of sharks and other major species to a catastrophic level by the Japanese fishing fleets in the Pacific, south seas and south Atlantic., So Politics are Politics and travel is travel you wont go anywhere if you look closely at any country they all have faults some that are more visual and pull at the heart strings more than others.
Don't get me wrong I am very much a lifelong supporter of protecting the Marine environment - but this is not me thinks the best place for an environmental debate.

The OP has but a single post: this one. While perhaps a worthy cause, it has no recognizable relationship to overland travel. Where I live, we call this "spam," and the commonly-held wisdom says to ignore or delete it.

The japanese kill about 15,000 whales annually for 'scientific research' mostly the research consists of eating them. It is one reason I have never bought a Japanese bike or car for myself and nothing else either if there was an acceptable substitute.

So true.

I was in Spain last week and the Bull Fighting was on TV in the bar. I watched it, I learned something new about it, and I still think (more so now) it's cowardly and unnecessary - but I loved my time in Spain (and Portugal).

All places are a some of thier parts (good and bad), get over it, if it bothers you so much don't go - simple.

It's in the Bar = "No useful content required". If people want to discuss/debate it, why not?

The weird thing is there are lots of posts on this in other forums where people use dolphin for extra impact, clearly whale slaughter is not as bad or we are used to it, dolphins get a much better press. In every press article there isnt a dolphin in sight, yet they still use the dolphin slaughter headline.
If you watch any nature programme on dolphins they are not the sweet helpful creatures we make them out to be, they are in fact sadistic fish murdering eating machines that kill each other and their smaller relatives:rolleyes:. Sharks are way more useful to the ecosystem its just that seaworld hasnt figured out how to get them to play to a crowd yet and no one made a film about giant killer dolphins.
In the uk we shoot/ cull loads of nice fluffy animals, seals, bambis, badgers we even had a go at hedgehog hunting. The RSPCB frequently cull everything on their lands that may effect birds. Yet there is no world outcry of "stop the seal murdering jocks" yet I see dead seals that have been shot on the beach all the time.
