Choosing the right cooker

The on going debates about the best gear always interest me. I enjoy reviewing new kit and testing the limits... is it small enough? is it powerful enough? can I simmer? how quickly does it boil water? You know... all the important questions.

But up to this point I've failed by not asking the most important question of all. Can I make pizza with it?

I've bought loads of stuff based on your recommendations, but this is having a laugh! Although I don't subscribe to the 'minimalist' traveller philosophy too much, I'd need a R1200GS / Goldwing to lug that around!

Perhaps I could use it as a kind of moncoque and build a bike around it . . . . that might be an interesting concept!

Best Overland Cooker Magic-Flame NG

Yeah, the MSR Mountain Safety Research is great cause it used same fuel as my bike, and the old, old Coleman hardly ever fails and burns just about anything... but the Magic-flame NG is much, much better. Here is a very

recent photo of Elisa with the Magic- Flame NG (see photo)

making coffee during a hard day of treasure hunting on the beach.

The Magic-Flame NG was invented and is manufactured in Switzerland by a

Swiss friend named Roland and it is

extremely efficient, lights as easy as any gas stove, and burns little scraps

of wood,twigs, sticks, etc. Boils water in seconds and folds completely flat.

Cooks anything fast.

REAL FAST!!! Enjoy .

No more looking for the right camping gas, no more gas period. There is an

option for burning alcohol - if you wish. Not needed.

Ventilation and removable pin design to accommodate a variety of cookware

But there are simpler, if cruder, ways to make pizza on a bike. Simply take your uncooked pizza, and wrap it in silver foil. Wire this round your silencer and ride (cooking times vary depending on make and model of bike). Then stop, unwire the parcel, and voila, tasty pizza . Don't know about pies though.

Another reason not to buy a1200GS then, with the pie on sideways, the filling would slop out.

Or just a sidecar. You should see some of the things folks take to rallies in sidecars.

Seriously though, I was at someone's house in Cordoba a few weeks ago and they made an extremely good pizza on the parillia in the back yard. Assuming you can carry a barbecue grill and a bag of charcoal, making pizza on the road is a definite possibility.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
