Caxton FX Travellers card.
 

Firstly sorry if this is in the wrong section, I wasn't sure of the best place to ask.

I have done a search and got some older results, so I thought it may be wise to get a fresh outlook.

Next year I will be travelling down the east coast of Africa to Cape Town. I have wondered about getting the Caxton Card as well as the usual visa debit and mastercard credit cards. Anyone regularly use one, are they as good as the web site suggests?

Any views and experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Me and the missus have been using CaxtonFX cards (we have one each) for years now. These cards have never failed us. Note - the underlying credit facility is provided by VISA.

I understand that FairFX (MasterCard) is also a good one – some argue even slightly better.

I suppose if I was ultra-sensible, then I would carry one of each. CaxtonFX because ostensibly it’s a VISA card - and a FairFX for the MasterCard connection. In addition, this way I could also compare and select the best exchange rate between the two types of cards at any one time.
[Hmmm? .. I think I might actually give this idea some more thought!]

But take it from me/us; you won’t go wrong with CaxtonFX. :thumbup1:

I've just got cards from caxton, yet to use them (will remedy that at the weekend), but the set up process works well, so it's a thumbs up so far.

I went with caxton over fairfax, because although the exchange rate is generally a fraction worse, caxton don't charge for atm use, while fairfax do. (disclaimer: that isn't from my own direct research, it's from Martin Lewis's site moneysavingexpert.com which is well respected in the UK).

Caxton FX is consistently 2% below base rate for the Euro card and 2.75% below the respective base rate for their Global card.

Personally I prefer the relative security that the Halifax Clarity Card brings, since its not actually 'your money' that you're spending until you pay the bill at the end of the month. You've not got to load it up either.

I have used a Fairfx card on a few trips and have found it satisfactory, the exchange rate has been pretty good. The Fairfx was recommended by moneysavingexpeert.com and I think the Caxton was second choice so both should be pretty good.

If you can get one, I agree Addie. I consider myself to have a perfect credit history and was turned down.

Thanks for the answers everyone. I had not heard of the Halifax Clarity Card so I will check that out. But it seems a no brainer to have at least one of these cards as a back up to the normal credit and debit card in my wallet.

I have travelled before but mostly Morocco and Europe, easy stuff money wise. I want to get it set up right before I go, constant money changing at borders and sorting exchange rates seems a little daunting. I'm sure I will learn a lot on route but I would rather not learn by expensive mistakes.
