Carnet

Hello to everyone,
I have a question and hope to find an answer from any of you wise travellers.
I currently live and work in Malaysia, I am an Italian national and i m wondering, if i buy a motorbike in Australia to start my world tour, which i know i would be able to do, would i be able on the other hand to obtain a carnet du passage for that bike from the australian authorities and export the bike from Australia onto next destination??? Any insight would be much appreciated.
Thanks, ride safe.

Hi Emi,

A carnet is a sort of guarantee that whatever you take out of the country you will bring back. So if you intend to export the bike from Aus into Malaysia (and then back to Italy?) a carnet is not for you. You will need to import the bike and pay the taxes.

That's my understanding, but if anyone knows better I'll be keen to learn.

Humm .. yes and no.

If you are intending to import it into Italy, but go through several other countries before then .. then you may need/find handy a carnet for the intermediary countries before you get to Italy.

The carnet is not an export document...

you will have problems if you do not return the bike to the country the carnet was issued in, even if you sold it on in a non carnet country.

This post would be better asked in the paperwork section of the forum, you may get more responses there.

Thank you

Tks guys,
I was thinkng of a rtw trip, due to excellent availability of good bikes in australia and the much cheaper price tag than second hand limited choice here in Malaysia. Wouldnt mind selling it back or finish it off back in australia.bier
Wonder roughly how much a carnet for a 10k bike ( - iran but including Africa n SE asia ) would cost.

as above, ask the question in the right section and I am sure you will get some useful answers!
have a browse first and you might even find the answer there! Alternatively you could use google to find the relevant Carnet office for your country and all will be revealed!:thumbup1:
