BMW R1200GS / BMW R1200GSA Future Improvements?

As a owner of the BMW R1200GS, I am very impressed with the handling and power this motorcycle provides. In addition, features like the on-board computer, heated grips and adjustable windshield make this motorcycle a pleasure to ride.

However, as great as this motorcycle is..... there are still things about this motorcycle that I feel could be improved.

My biggest gripe has to be the clunky transmission that sometimes happens when shifting. I don't know if this clunky transmission and false neutral happens with all BMW motorcycles, but it was also present with my former K75S.

Just wondering if you are also experiencing this type of transmission problem?

What you like about your BMW R1200GS or GSA?

And what you think BMW could do to improve to the GS / GSA?

Thank You,

Eric

1. Fix the problems with the fuel pump controller. There's been 87 recorded failures so far this year in just the UK, see UKGSer: fuel pump controller failures

2. have a substantially lower first gear (like 50% lower) to assist in slow offroad work and town work.

Otherwise it's a fine bike. I did 50,000 miles on my 12GS, and 45,000 so far on my 12GSA.

Can't comment on false neutrals. But I did read a link recently about the Gertrag gearboxes and how the clunkiness and noise was due to their position on that bike and the lack of some damping washers, or something like that. Unfortunately, I can remember neither the link nor the details, but in short I understand these traits to be endemic to the design of the boxer twin.

If it makes you feel better my Ural's gear change sounds like frozen tuna fish landing on a car bonnet! (there's imagery for you!)

I'm in Iran on my way home to Australia on my '07 GSA. Just clocked up 30 000km. My gearbox is an absolute dream compared to the 1997 R1100GS I used to have. One thing I do know is that I need to be fairly firm and positive with my left foot though. But it's been the same with all the other bike brands I've owned.
