Biker in real need of help

I first met Derek Boocock in Sidi Ifni, in southern Morocco. We hung about together for several days and eventually Derek confided that he has terminal cancer.

His wife had died of cancer some years before and Derek decided he would rather do something with the time he has left, so he’s riding round the world the hard way, on a push bike.

Unfortunately he’s had a head-on collision with a 4x4 in Tajikistan and had to spend several days in hospital. He’s recuperating but his bike and luggage is a write-off.

Derek sold everything he had in the UK to fund this trip and without our help he won’t get any further. I know it's been a digging deep month what with the Philippines, Poppies and Children in Need, but I’d be really grateful if you could check out the links below and consider clicking on the ‘donate’ button on the second link.

Call for help: http://www.dereksbiketrip.com/believe-to-achieve/

And thanks to a few who've already contributed through the previous post.

Tim

95 viewings but it seems it didn't tug at any heart strings (unless they were quiet donations).

I'm currently on a ship in the middle of the Bay of Biscay but due to the wonders of modern technology, I heard from Derek a few minutes ago.

He had to leave Tajikistan as his visa time was up and has arrived in Osh in Kyrgyzstan with the remnants of his bike (the frame is a write-off as well). He can stay in-country for 60 days and will rest up before heading for Bishkek and its airport where we hope to ship in what he needs.

Message from Derek:" I have used the phrase 'The Kindness of Strangers' a few times now in my blogs, but after my recent accident it has taken on a new meaning for me. Without the help I'm being given my trip would be over and to all who have become part of my adventure I cannot find words to thank you, except to say you have renewed my faith in human kindness. "

Many thanks everyone!

Some good news for Derek...

Eric Sovern from Surly Bikes in Minnesota together with one of his distributors, Chuck from Pacific Coast Cycles, have offered to fund both the bike frame/forks and the shipping of the parts to Kyrgyzstan.

I managed to locate another American called Ryan Hornung who runs Iron Horse Nomads (what a name!) and lives in Bishkek. He's offered to help Derek with the importing side.

There's quite a lot of non-Surly bike bits that are needed plus luggage frames and panniers which are being sorted out and I'm sure the donations he's received will cover the cost of those with some to spare. So all in all, a terrific outcome. People have really come up with the goods for him!

Derek also needs to ship out of Kyrgyzstan to somewhere warmer as with visa delays earlier on, plus the time lost in the accident, and now the gear replacement, he's run out of time and winter is closing in.

The number of people watching Derek's FaceBook page has more than doubled in the last few days with over 250 now. So to keep up to date with Derek, click 'like' on https://www.facebook.com/dereksbiketour

I've just made a donation Tim - You once helped me by sending me the 'by-pass' fix when I was stuck in Khorug with a knackered BMW fuel controller problem. I also met you briefly at Lumb Farm about five years ago now.

Tim, stellar job in coordinating all of this. I'm sure you get many karma points for this :-)

Derek now also has a fundraising page at Terminal Cancer means Adventure! by Derek's Tour - GoFundMe

Don't be put off by the meager amount on there. Many of us have donated via PayPal before that page was up.

Cheers,
boarder

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
