2009 Honda Goldwing 1800 RTW -V - BMW GSA
Ok,
Here we go. I'll get my BMW GSA hate out the way first. 1. Nice Bike..... yes I do mean it I had one px for goldwing.. 2. expensive..... can be depends on how you ride and look after it. 3. Engine is nearly 80 years old. (boxer designed b4 WW2. 1920s) only now it is fuel injected, computerized and oil cooled not air... 4. Nice to ride but still has that thumper problem.. to many righthand bends and it can catch you out, same with 2 lefthand bends..:oops2: 5. ride hight.. good if you are over 6 foot.... 6. Looks better when dirty. No I do not hate the GSA but hate the wait for parts... Now for the Goldwing... No I will let you tell me what you Hate about the wing..... Yes we all Know it costs £22,125 but you can get a new one for £17,125 or less..(you need to haggle and know what has not changed) A word of Warning.. ANYONE WHO GETS UPSET AND STARTS TO MISSTHE FUN AND PI£$ TAKING CAN PUT THIER BEER DOWN AND POLISH MY WING AS IT'S NOT BEEN WASHED FOR OVER A YEAR.. this bike is what I am taking RTW so nobody is going to change my mind. You probably know, one of your friendly neighbors, Oisin from Ireland is on a RTW trip right now. He should arrive in Magadan any day now. He posted plenty of good info in pics, vid & text. The only thing, he has not done the Stans on this trip. I'm tinkering with a 2012 RTW trip, "the other way around" :mchappy:. I need to align a few stars first :biggrin: |

I doubt anyone would try to talk you out of going on the Wing. Should be a good laugh! Have you ever seen a Gold Wing after it's flipped on down the highway? I hope you never, ever have an off on that monster. They do not crash well. That alone would give me pause about owning a Gold Wing. I recognize the many faults BMW GS's have, but having witnessed TWO crash in front of me ... at speed .... I must say GS's crash very well for a big, heavy bike. Both times riders went to hospital, bikes were fine, ride- able. Being from Scotland I'm not sure you've ridden your Wing in truly high temps with high humidity. If so, Where? I've ridden my buddies Wings ... both times it was in the mid 80's. Not really hot by our standards. First thing I noticed being behind that motorhome-like shield/fairing was the massive about of heat coming up and the TOTAL lack of AIR FLOW. Not enough fresh cooling air. In slow going I could see this being nasty. A well set up GS will go about anywhere on most roads and a skilled rider can do quite a bit of nasty off road. No, the GS would not be my 1st choice as a dirt bike but sometimes traveling you end up having to ride on really crap roads, lots of mud, ruts and such. The GS can do it if you can. Have you thought about what your plan is for the Wing in those conditions? I'd do a quick run down to Spain or Portugal during a serious heat wave. July or August may be a good time. You should be able to ride there from Scotland in a few days on the Wing. 700 mile days easy. I'd be interested to know how you get on in 100F plus heat. Next try out some dirt roads (plenty in Portugal) where you can only go about 25 mph. Let us know how you get on. Now imagine riding ... ALL DAY ... going slow, in even higher temps .... now add 90% humidity. India, parts of Asia, parts of Africa all can offer such conditions. Those GS's sure can have issues, but if your Wing goes down my guess is you could be stuck a while awaiting parts. While you're waiting for your son to graduate ... I'd take off on some shorter trips. |

Don't feel too bad Al, today we had two BIG GS groups riding round my neighborhood ... trying to escape our mini heat wave here. One group of about 30 and later another 25 or so GS riders. All headed for the same Blue Rondel beach towel no doubt. Ain't the internet wonderful?
Hey, at least they all waved at me on my Rat Bike DR! Suffice to say, this place is crawling with GS BMW's ... and the weird thing is our local dealer (huge) just went tits up. BMW sent the Semi and cleaned everything out .... BOOM! Gone! Here Today, Gone Tomorrow :stormy: |

If you've decided on a 'Wing, then fine. If you're son is on somehting similar, no one will be holding the other up. Some parts will be a breeze, others a royal PITA... but that is half the fun, even if you only realise it on the other side. But do plan your route carefully. When travelling sandy (:thumbdown:) trails as part of an HU meet in Argentina there were all sorts of bikes in the group. GS, DL, KTM, KLR, an outfit, and even a couple of Diversion XJ900s! There was also a couple on a full dress Hog! They made it to the destination, but I dare say it hadn't been easy. The rider was looking a bit "exhausted" and his wife had been looking very alert (read stressed!!). As long as you factor that sort of thing in and accept it, or give yourself alternatives, you'll have a great time. A Wing makes a fine wind-break for a tent too!! Have fun!! If it is 2012, I truly hope we'll be finally off, too. Watch out for a Ural with dogs in it! |
