Bike modifications…
So preparing the bike is half the fun, apart from the normal fitting luggage and up-rated suspension … what’s your best / craziest modification? |

Lots of rough road modifications
My favorite is putting industrial velcro on the side of a can of chain lube and velcroing it to the top of the front fender.
![]() For REALLY rough stuff (Amazon) we tie-wrap a machete to the swing arm in case we need to cut our way thru a trail or "build" a bridge over a gorge. But one of the most useful is "hiding" the CDI box (electronic ignition, mega-bucks and "up-a-creek" without it) inside the air box to keep the "South American 5-finger-discount" at bay. ![]() One more really practical one: Forget those complicated, too wide, too expensive tank packs. Take your well made small back pack and run the pack straps over and under the tank with the top of the pack up by the handle bar, then clip the "chest strap" under the tank and "Walla", you have a tank pack that feels good on your back too! ![]() Toby (charapa) Around the Block 2007 |

My old man has helped me do this twice and it also works on side stands.
Just a case of making two holes to pass a padlock through and voila the bike cant be pushed away or fall of its stand in transit or when some shite sits on it when youre not looking. Cheap easy mod and very hard to forget to unlock the bike as it wont go anywhere. Well it does on the side stand mod but not very far.

My XT has the usual bash plate/centre stand/luggage etc. But I have also recently made a home made rack for a Peli-case 'top box' and made myself a screen. (4mm clear polycarbonate bolted to the plastic head light surround and two arms made of flat steel attached to the handlebars with clamps rescued from the brace of an old set of handlebars: total cost £20!)

I gues all those 5 figred types will all know about the air box now. And the handle bar .. keep tellin 'em, guys .. just keep it up ... there are not many places to hide stuff ...
-------------------- Rather than tie wraps .. use hose clips (jubilie dlips) - not as easy to cut and can be reused.
