Trelleborg Army Specials?
 

Many people run them? On what bike? How do they hold up? Its getting close to new rubber time again! (im on a DR650!)

Hi, if you check out the blogs section " Travellers Stories " you'll find Geoff Shingleton's blog - Geoff has been using the Trelleborgs for his RTW trip, he's a top bloke and I'm sure if you dropped him an email he'd give you a decent objective opinion on these tyres, after all he's used them for the full length of Africa, so far.

I am currently running Trelleborg Army Specials for the first time, on my xt660r - picked especially for a December winter trip that took me from UK-DK-Sweden-Southern Norway-Sweden-Finland-Estonia-Lat-Lith-PL-CZ-currently in Slovakia.

I am truely impressed with the way they held on in icy conditions - gripped well, stayed soft and have a lot of life left in them - used both on and off road.

My reason for purchasing them was both cost - they seemed pretty cheap compared to others, and if the Swedish army uses them, then they can't be too bad. Had them shipped from Trellesport - Enduro Competiton MotorcycleTyres, Army Special Tyre and it arrived real quick.

Haven't used them in hot desert conditions so can't comment, but otherwise impressed. Although if Geoff's used them for Africa then you can't go too wrong!

I used them on my 1995 XTZ660 in 2004 on a 1000 mile trip in Iceland. The roads were mostly gravel but not soft. The tyres were very good, with full luggage and pillion. The problem is when riding single on tarmac; this was frightening, especially when brand new. So much so that i thought i'd left the rims bare. However once bedded in, they were better. I would use them again for off road but change them back to something more suitable for the roads afyter the trip.

Having said that, I was too tight to buy more and still have them 10,000 miles later, after two subsequent trips around thet Eastern Bloc and Spain.

So, for 90 quid a set, good off road, but terrible when light laden and on damp asphalt

These tyres sound and look as if they good off road and long lasting which is a rare combination.

I would be interested to know what pressures you run for on and off road use and if they are noisy on the road?

As Mike said, I rode through Africa on trelly's! I couldn't recommend 'em enough! Cheap, easy to put on, (even though Grant J might disagree, tee hee hee!) and tougher than John Waynes underpants!
I run them from St Louis, Senegal all the way to Cape Town (west Coast) and only had 1 front and 2 rears changing them in Yaounde, Cameroon. I kept the spare rear till Angola before leaving it as it still had tread!
I initially tried then on the piste in Malaga on a HUMM meet and REALLY enjoyed their grip on the fun stuff. Reasonable for the highway too at 75mph/120+kph with or without luggage and they gave amazing grip on Congos finest highways! (insert; MUD, Mud, Mud!) Obviously they are an off road tyre so on 'damp asphalt' take it easy but that's the same for any similar tyre. The two guys I was riding with went through their tyres like I do beer, quick..! Not to mention expensive!
So for the price, if you don't like 'em then no tears will be lost, If named brands are you thing then go ahead but I was adventerous and tried them and came away happy!
