Name that engine part...

Hello, (long time/no post and all that...)

Carried out an internal engine inspection today (Wednesdays are really boring) and have come accross a part on the clutch side that I cannot identify. My bike is (still) a 125cc Derbi.

The object in question is the circular piece just east of the clutch assembly, and just north of the yellow gear. Its cover was a metal plate with three screws and some kind of spring loaded pin. Photo below;

does anyone have any idea what it is? It sems to be on the crankshaft and it roates with it too. Any help would be much appreciated.

Sites it rotate or anything? I have no idea what it is, but good to sere you've still got the Derbi, I'm on my second, one day we'll get together.

Interesting, very interesting, but no idea.....Does it mate up with an oil flow or return pipe/gallery in the casing?

Perhaps a legacy part for a mechanical advance and retard system for the ignition?

It rotates with the crankshaft, and does not sit flush with the clutch basket but prevents it's removal. It was full of oil when I opened it, appeared to be the same consistence/viscosity as my engine oil so I pesume it is open at the other side. There is nothing in the casing, apart from the clutch lever. Havnt had the left side off yet but will have a look tomorrow.

Nice to here your still biking Alex. Havn't done much myself since Scotland last year. Are you still rocking a Terra?

What does the manual call it?

You DO have a service manual, don't you? Ballsy to tear into an engine without one - take my hat off to that...

Is it some kind of oil reservoir for the crank bearings? Oil filter bypass valve in case of blocked filter? NFI but one of the usual mechanic might know....

Could it be an oil filled fly wheel, some kind of damper/smoother of power?

mark manley 2 Feb 2012 10:11

Is it a centrifugal oil filter?

Yes this seems to be the part! The second link shows a diagram that matches the part I could not identify. Thanks for all the help :thumbup1:
