Front tyre wearing quicker?
 

Hi all i was just wondering if front tyres normally wear quicker than rear tyres.ive been running michelin anakees on my africa twin for 2 1/2 years and 100000km and the last set a had fitted were a regular anakee on the rear and an anakee2 on the front because i couldnt get a regular anakee for the front .time for new tyres and the rear still has loads of life left and the front...well its getting slippery?usually its the other way round?

I noticed this on my R80gs, I was using Avon Distanzias front and rear, the rear did 9.500miles and was changed due to 'tread block cracks' but still had plenty of tread left, but the front was completely 'shot to bits' and I was expecting 'as usual' it to be the other way round.......you are not alone!!

bugger,i contacted michelin and pretty much got the old "its not our fault" too many things come into the equation so just get a new set. think ill try metzeler tourances next?

It's normal, the more knobblier tyres suffer from this, I think it's due to braking and the tyre having a smaller contact patch.

It is not just me then, I have exactly the same thing with Distanzias on my 80G/S and wondered what I was doing wrong, I would normally expect to get double the mileage out of a front to a rear, I certainly did with the old Avon Gripsters.
I am guessing that modern front tyres are made of a softer rubber to give better grip with a penalty to be paid in shorter life expectancy.

I had standard fit Metzeler Tourances on my XTZ660Z.

The front wore quicker than the rear. I put it down to me using more front brake than rear.... e.g. I go through 2 sets of front pads on my albeit off road moto,to one set of rears.

I can only say the usual is maybe 2-3 times less wear on the front than the rear.

I always used to reckon 3 rears to 2 fronts. These days I seem to change them both at the same time. I have Distanzias on the XT. They have lasted about 4000 miles. The rear has 1k or so left on it, but the front is shot to bits. I reckon Mark is right. Compounds are much more sophisticated than they used to be, and perhaps they are using a much softer one for the fronts. Certainly the Avons are astonishingly grippy on the road and I have total confidence in the front patch.
