Vstrom external fuel filter mod

Hi,

Anyone want to know how to modify the 1000 Vstrom to bypass the original in-tank expensive fuel filter and add an external cheap car FI filter?

I have posted a procedure on the Vstrom rapidforum website (link below), so won't re-do it again here on the HUBB. I hope to add a few better pics in due course.

Just like the BMW R 1150Gs, this is a great idea for a foolish factory dsign. The Strom needs an external filter even more becuase the current in tank filter is described as "permanent"...is there any update on this modification and has anyone tried it over an extended period of time?

about to take my VSTROM from singapore to sweden to raise funds for breast cancer research, v keen on learning how to fit that external fuel filter. present link wants me to look at thai girls. could you please re post? a
assume this means you have to remove the fuel filter thats already factory fitted?

I did this on my r1100 GS years ago. The filter are just a few dollars and can be replaced frequently. I will be doing this, I would like to hear from some one who has done this.

I wouldn´t do any such mods to the 650. No reason to mess around with a well working FI system.

I did Finland -> Oz on a stock DL650AK7, and except for some low octane pinging sometimes, it never missed a beat. I often had no idea of the fuel quality, tried to avoid bottled fuel, but sometimes there was no choice. The filter screen in the pump was almost full of goo after the trip, though. Not long before I would have possibly got some trouble with it.

So if I´d go again, I´d take a few of those as spares (they´re not expensive) and change it a couple of times along the way. Taking the tank and the pump off is a bit of work, but just practice before leaving, it´s no biggie and the tank has to come up for air filter maintenance anyway. I´d also take another filter, like a “sock”, that you´ll just simply put into the fuel tank hole each time you refill.

(oh, I´m not sure, if you are actually preparing for a trip or not.. but anyway, for the 650, I would not bother. Just my 0.02)

At least on the DL650 there is a sock screen filter and then an internal fuel filter that is part of the fuel pressure regulator assembly. So if it was me and I was going on a long long trip in places with questionable fuel, then I would be tempted to carry one of each or at lest the fuel pressure regulator assembly ( the filter is encased in this part and not replaceable by itself ) as the screen mesh filter can be washed and reused.

I've read up on the mod on earlier DL1000's and it certainly doesn't look that difficult, but you would still have to contend with the sock mesh filter, which is the first stage in fuel filtration.

To my way of thinking this is one of those things that should be part of a normal maintenance schedule and some bike manufactures including BMW & HD recommend replacing the internal fuel filter at around 25 K miles.

I did this mod on my DL1000 a couple of years ago . It makes changing the filter a quick and cheap job. I have a filter from a Chevy Pop (which are very common In Mexico). it is fitted with similar connectors to ones used to attch the line to the tank. I changed the filter yesterda when the bike started running a little weird . it cost me 7 dollars and was on the shelf in a local prts store here. Sounds better than a couple of hundred dollars and a possible 3 week wait.
The bke does seem to use a litle more gas since the mod.
