Using oil on DRZ400E

Was wondering if anybody out there has experienced any problems with their DRZ using oil? My bike is now over the 50k mark and has been running fine except the oil issue. It also has just had a carby clean after picking up some crappy fuel in Iran. The bike is not leaking oil and no smoke comes out of the exhaust except when giving the bike a massive handful of throttle.
I have heard that possibly it could be an issue with the crankcase breather? Not sure how to rectify the problem and being in Eastern Turkey trying to find a decent mechanic seems to be a bit of a challenge!
Any help and information would be appreciated.

A high compression four-stroke, in otherwise good condition, can burn a steady amount of oil without making much smoke. If you can see oil smoke, then it's already pretty bad.
