DL 650 2005: Convert Odometer from Miles to Kilometers

Hi,

Just bought myself a lovely Suzuki V-Strom 650 2005.
The only small issue with it is that the Odometer is in miles.
How do I convert that to Kilometers?

I cannot imagine that Suzuki built 2 separate Odometers, so I would assume that there might be a way to choose either km or mile.

On a forum, I read that it is possible on a 2005 Suzuki GXR!
Suzuki GSX-R Motorcycle Forums Gixxer.com - View Single Post - speedo kmh to mph change ???

The following link even gives a sequence of button presses, but on my Wee-Strom 2005, that only causes my clock to be set :-(
Suzuki GSX-R Motorcycle Forums Gixxer.com - View Single Post - how do I change my dash from miles to km's

I could use a SpeedoHealer, but that would mean that my speedometer will max out at 160 km/h :-(

Or maybe I will just have to learn to live with miles ;-)

The Speedo, I can change by ordering a new Gauge Face ... like at the following place:
Raceratb.com

Does anybody have a tip about the Odometer???
Thanks very much,
Regards,
Wouter

Have you asked a Suzuki dealer?

I know this can be changed in some bikes, like a GSX-R, but it may have a digital speedo, too, so it is easier to convert both speedometer and odometer to a different reading. The DL650 has analog speedo (and at least in the US, it has miles in bigger numbers, and kph in smaller numbers). My DL650 E19-type user manual only speaks about kph, does not mention miles.

I suggest you do some reading here, I do not believe it possible without changing the whole instrument cluster

Re: DL 650 2005: Convert Odometer from Miles to Kilometers

Hi Guys,

Let me reply to some of your answers:

Yes, some of the GXRs can be converted by hitting the ADJ and SET buttons in the proper order. I think the procedure is described in one of the links in my original post.

The speedo is not much of a problem. I can order a new Gauge Face and drop that in the speedo. The problem is the Odometer.

I have sent an email to a Suzuki Dealer, but have not yet got a response. Maybe he thinks: "The fool ... he should have bought his V-Strom here, then he would not have this problem" ;-)

I just checked out the V-Strom Riders International forum. Found two answers:
- Best option is to use a bicycle computer
- SpeedoHealer
Thanks for the link though ... it seems like a usefull source of information!

I am afraid that I need to replace the unit ...
But I do not understand that a factory would design two different devices, when they can design one that fits both markets: Miles and km's. But then again ... I have seen stuff that I did not understand before :-(

So, Thanks guys!
If anybody (else) has somthing that I can use to solve this, please let me know ;-)
Regards,
Wouter

Hi Wouter,

I've seen many bikes that are designed for the European market come with kph only clocks and many designed for the UK market come with mph and a kph option. I presume the logic is that most Euro bikes are unlikely to come to an mph country, where as more UK bikes are likely to visit kph area's?

I have a Japan spec XT250, complete with a kph digital display. This can be converted at a price of around £130, so I decided to leave it as it was.

My WeeStrom is in MPH. I have a Garmin Summit GPS mounted on the handlebars with a bicycle bracket. I mounted a 12V socket to power it. The GPS is set to kph and I use the trip meters on the GPS and the bike for reference on road mileage. Interesting to note that the mile on the speedo is exactly the same as a mile on the GPS, BUT the speedo over reads by 10%, so 77mph is in fact 70mph true reading. Yes I do travel that slow at times.
