High Oil and fuel consumption
Hi Guys, I am now in Iran and having a few problems. First started crossing the desert from Pakisan as the bike started to splutter and stall after about 300kms. (I used a petrol additive carb cleaner before leaving for the desert don't know if this has caused problems). When I got to Iran I noticed that the choke cable was jammed and bike appeared to be running rich. I then removed the carb, and cleaned out the choke plunger area which seemed to fix the sticking cable. I then thought to check the spark plugs. The problem got worse when one snapped off still inside the head!!. The only way to remove the broken section was to remove the head and drill it out. I then got the hole machined and a sleeve made to bring it back to original. The job looks good and engine seemed to run fine after re-assembly except that I couldn’t find the correct spark plug replacement so had to use a shorter one. After riding 500kms everything seemed to go fine except running even richer a strong smell of fuel. Except that my fuel economy has gone down considerably 100kms less than usual on a full tank. And I have started burning a lot of Oil. Not sure what to do any suggestions? Thanks Ben |

Too late now ...
For the future .. how often are you checking the valve clearences? When the temperature gets hot they can close up leading to burnt valves .. ----------------------- Check the oil breather is not blocked .. probably not the cause but easy to check. I suspect you'll need to have the engine checked for the oil burning .. checking valves for burning ... looking at the top of the piston .. while that is being done you can check the carby - diaphram ... could have deteriated .. check for holes and going sticky on the surface. How far to the nearest Suki dealer? |
You don't say what bike you have, but going by the details you gave it's probably a DR650SE. I have this, doubled all service intervals and even after riding through Pakistan in 51C the valve clearances hardly ever change. What Frank writes is valid, of course. But, what I think has happened is that running with the choke on has ruined your cylinder and piston. You don't say whether the engine smokes, but the other symptoms point to that. If this is the case you are looking at replacing both. AFAIK the cylinder is coated and can't be rebored.

Maybe you should contact nearest Suki dealer and ask if there is a wrecked motor avalible? could be the easiest option... quick and you know what you are up for before you get there. Or you could preorder the pistion, rings, cyclinder and gaskets before you get there ... that reduces the waiting time (hopefully). I do lack the long term exposure on the DR .. so am taking the conservative approach with hindsight over some other bikes. |
Thanks for the advice
Sorry I have a DR650SE. I am not smoking on normal running, but need someone to ride behind to check for smoke on Gear Changes. I will shorten the oil change intervals and keep the oil up so should make it thought to Turkey. Should I do a pressure test before going to the trouble of replacing the cylinder?
My friend had the same stalling problems in the heat and he is about a week ahead, do you think this might have been caused by the coils overheating and missing a spark? He thinks it’s an electrical problem. I will let you know what I find out. Cheers Ben |
