Flat spot

Hi can anyone give me some advice, my girlfraind has a 97 DR650, it's done about 45000 miles and was running ok but had a bit of a flat spot, i took the carb apart and found that the needle jet was warn and so i replaced it this has now made the flat spot worse.I've allso had to adjust the clutch and this now helps slightly, but when pulling away it still wants to die and then pickup again. any idears would be great cheers Skip.

First off replace both the needle and the needle jet. They both wear. Make sure you put the needle back in the correct notch if it's adjustable - may not be.

Second, I suspect that the carb is dirty, and needs a thorough cleaning, so I'd do that, then make sure the mixture screw is properly adjusted. This often causes the symptoms you describe. Probably lean, but then most bikes these days come a little lean from the factory. Richening the low speed settings often helps.

Also make sure the air cleaner is clean, and change the spark plug.

Check valves while you're at it - BEFORE you try to tune/adjust the carb - carb should be LAST after everything else is done.
