DRZ E and S models
 

I know the common differences between the S and the E models, including the rear sub frame issues and the different carbs. I am busy prepping a long range desert tourer and have a couple of questions if anyone can help.

I know the e model puts out more BHP but can anyone give me an indication of the MPG in various conditions? ans also the effects of riding without a cooling fan for extended periods in soft sand, any overheating issues?

The E version doens NOT get as good as gas mileage I understand. Also the other advantage of the S model is the S carb may not produce as much power, it is not as sensitive to elevation changes as the E model carb. I have an S version with aftermarket pipe, 3x3 mod and E cams. It makes plenty of power. The cams made a big diffrance. I'm not sure how that will affect my mileage as yet however.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that some people wire on a computer fan to their DR-Z's. I would peobably consider doing that for a lot of desert racing, although they don't overheat easy.

i believe there is a kick option. the first e models were available with no e start, why i dont know, the line was dropped due to the e start model being available. all parts though will be available from suzuki and be able to be retro fitted. it may set you back a few 100 squid but its a good back up.

Ok, all sounds good. So good in fact that I just bought an 'e' model bike. It looks as if I'm off to Morocco for a test run in a few weeks and althgough there is little sand there unless you go looking I am still a littel concerned about over heating and fuel economy. The bike is stock except for an aftermarket pipe as far as I know. I will be putting on a larger tank and other usual mods but am interested in the idea of fitting a computer fan. Anyone got any info on size, model etc. I'm guessing they dont like water either......so how does that work?!!

Also any advice regarding specific info on adjusting the pumper to reduce fuel economy?

Sadly I wont get the chance to test the bike properly until morocco so any advice regarding stock mpg in various different conditions would also be useful.

Best source of info is ThumperTalk . I am not sure what brand of computer fan, but any would probably work. I believe computer fans are 12 v anyway, but not sure. As for wiring it in, I would probably wire it so it turned off when the bike was turned off just so I didn't kill my battrie in the middle of the desert. Also you could probably get an E setup and put on. Doesnt look hard to do after looking at my fan setup once but computer fan is probably alot cheaper.

This image is where I'm aiming but I'm struggling with the high screen at the front. I've spoken to Boyd (the guy in the photo) and he is saying that the screen on the bike came from a scrap yard but he cant remember what it was off originally........ problems is, I've only had the bike for a week and it ships to africa within the next few weeks, so I 'm on a tight schedule.

Any suggestions ????

How about making your own screen from a bit of perspex . I made a screen extention for my gs this way & it worked well Use blades for cutting plastic if using a jigsaw so it dont shatter i heated up the edge over the gas cooker & bent it on the sink to give the curve at the top then driled 2 holes & bolt it to the fairing . What mods have you done ? i also have a DRZ & have been thinking about doing somthing simlar let me know how you get on.

Carb breather and deep water

I've got a DRZ-e too (I'm going to Moroc with Dave and the "Boyd" bike in the pic is now mine) and was looking at how to put a T or Y piece in the carb breather and feed an extra tube upwards in order to prevent an engine stop when crossing deep water. There are 6 hoses hanging out of the bottom of the bike. 1 is the crank case breather and the other 5 are clear plastic and come from the carb area. Any suggestion which of the 5 should heve the T/Y piece splitter?

I did this mod on my DRZ-s and klr250 and it was super easy. There was only 1 carb breather! On the klr250 I made it through a ford in a river and the water was over the seat and the bike didn't miss a beat.

Just a quick message to say thanks for all the support and advice regarding DRZ's over the last few months.

I finally prepped an 'E' model and just took it to Morocco for a couple of weeks for a shakedown. It is by far the best of all the models of bike I've ever 'overlanded', certainly for the more extreme offroad stuff. A really fine piece of engineering.
