DRZ 400 - Equipment

Hi all,

Ok, I have a DRZ400/E (so without the frame going all the way back) and we are planning on going to Morocco now in September, and within 2 years we will do a big trip, but that's for later... Having also an 1200GS Adv., knowing how easy panniers are, I still want for the DRZ soft luggage, as we will do 80% offroad and only 20% onroad...

My question is, what system did you use for bags/panniers/... on a DRZ400 for your travels? Certainly for those who have the E model...
I know everybody has another opinion, but I am searching for something that will stay on the bike, where I can put my stuff in it and don't overload the capacity of the frame of the E model. Or should I just put a frame of an S model instead... cost about 150€... but then I will place the same question about the packing etc... :helpsmilie:

I've found these "dirtbagz" but I am not sure on how they will attach to the E frame...

So, any help or opinion, on how you did the travel with the DRZ400 is mostly welcome, and pics says more than... so those would also be greatly appreciated!

Thanx!

Hi there,
There have been 1 or 2 threads on DRZ racks/luggage on the hubb already. Maybe do a search.

Here's my luggage on a 2005 drz400e:

Morocco. The rack on rear of the 2 bikes is an improved version of the front one. Made from flat steel.

As above with Oxford sportsbike throw over bags and a small gear roll.

Dordogne, France. Giantloop Greatbasin bag. Also fenderbag with 2 tubes and bag on “windshield”

As above but with rider…

Hello.

I have used two different luggage sets on my DRZ400E.

First, the Dirt Bagz:

which were quite useful until the left rack broke twice. I welded it, but decided to go for something stronger. Then I bought a DRZ-S subframe and installed Wolfman racks and saddlebags:

The Wolfman are expensive but better in all ways (especially the massive racks) except for being too wide, something which in enduro narrow places pays its toll.

Hi we had the s model and used giant loops which were very good and stayed tight to the bike. Also other gear on a rack. Think we had a tad too much on as the subframe broke on mine where the rack bolts on. Just travel as light as poss altho not so easy when you've got camping gear etc (we were away for 4 mths). Happy travels Tim

just wondering what did you go with in the end? looking for something myself, bearing in mind i have the sm model and the rack isn't all that strong

We went with the Wolfman E-10 softbags on the rear and the tankbag in front.
On top of that Ortlieb waterproof rollbag, worked perfect for Morocco. We had the tent in one side bag, the sleepingbag in the other, clothing in the ortlieb on top and then all electronics in a Peli case.

Now we are changing a bit the config, so both bikes will have the rear rack from Nomadic Racks (still one with the peli case) and added a softbag on the "windscreen" of one bike. The pelicase is just bigger than my macbookair so it fits just in and honnestly I wouldn't go anywhere without it anymore. It's also the only place that can be "locked" on the bike, so valuables etc go in the pelicase.

We are very happy with this config and the bikes are holding really well like this!
