DR650 fuel tanks
Sorry, I know this one's probably been done to death. I'm looking for a larger fuel tank for my DR650 (2006) and the options as I see it are:

Safari 30L- Bit too big. I found the 22L capacity on my 1150GS fine for most of my Americas trip.

IMS 4.9Gal- So is this Imperial gallons (works out as 22.3L) or US gallons (18.5L)? If its actually 22L, this might be fine for what I want.

Clark 3.7Gal- a bit too small really.

Acerbis do one but not for my year- I've read some comments about this being a better tank? Is this the case and do you have to make up other mounts for it?

So if the IMS 4.9Gal tank is 22L, I might go for this. The cheapest I've found this tank going for is $225 in the US but now I'm in Australia, is there a supplier over here that I can order one from without getting hit for horrendous import duties as I've seen them selling in Australia for about $550!

If you end up going for the IMS, I'd spring for the Pingel Petcock too. I thought I could get by with the IMS petcock, but it progressively felt worse each time I turned it on and off, in the sense that the innerworkings were grinding and probably wouldn't last long. The Pingel is about as smooth as it gets.

I think the question he was asking is whether it holds 4.9 US gallons or 4.9 Imperial gallons. There is a difference. As Mike noted, that a difference of 4 litres.

Spot on Nigel- I've amended my original post.

Offroad Touring Motorcycles For Sale - Australian Buy Back Scheme

This guy in Australia sells the IMS tank and states they are 22L so am assuming that it is Imperial gallons. Still, I'd hope to find one cheaper than $550 if I possibly can...

I think there is a topic on how to fit the Acerbis tank to the SE. I've got one and so have many others, but yes, you do have to modify the bike and make your own mounts.

Got a Clarke on my DR. 16 litres is fine for me here in SA, enough where the OEM 13l would not get me to the next pump.
Sometimes take 10l Jerrycan on the passenger seat.
The Clarke looks fantastic (better than OEM IMHO) and does not ding. No issues with quality besides the need to make two steel spacer pipes for the rear mounting.
Also: Make peace with your enemies before they pee into the tank!

The Aqualine is fugly and too big.

I originally wanted an IMS but got the Clarke as a cheapo.

Think I'll prob just go with the IMS as it seems to be around 22L (they can vary by about 1/2L due to manufacturing differences apparently).

Unfortunatelly they are so damned expensive here, I'll see how much it is to get one shipped from the US although the Aussie import duty will maybe make it not worthwhile.

Well, I guess it's better that way than the opposite of less capacity than quoted.

I emailed IMS quite some time ago about international distributors, but I can't say that I got a sensible reply.
I also asked some US shops about international shipping but they were not greatly interested - I don't recall getting a reply from most of them, and the others did not want to do it.
I'll be interested to hear how you get on with this.

So what exactly is involved in making the Acerbis fit the post 96 bikes- I see from your link there seems to be whole load of metal brackets to fabricate?
