1975 Suzuki TS185 Exhaust Leak at Head

Hi,

I'm trying to fix a leak right where the engine meets the pipe. I took the pipe off and to my surprise the ring held in place with two bolts wasn't clamping anything down. The exhaust is just 'there.' I'm used to seeing a lip there that the ring you are bolting into place braces up against giving a tight seal. No wonder exhaust gets passed by it. Or am I missing anything? How is this thing supposed to seal?

Thanks in advance.

I've not worked on a TS185 but I imagine you are missing the compression ring that slides onto the exhaust pipe and is a wedge shaped circle that acts as a seal as the exhaust clamp is bolted onto the head and wedging it into the exhaust port to seal the gap and hold the header in tight. It can disintigrate with heat over a period of time and may be missing.

Others more familiar with Suzukis may know more.

Best luck,
John Downs

My TS(trail snail)185 had a ring on the end of the down pipe which the flange pulled into the cylinder head and clamped it there with a gasket ring to give a good seal. It sounds like something is missing from yours.

Lots of friendly people ready to help at Suzukits which was formed due to the large number of TS-based questions here.
Cheers bloke
